From Cindy Noren

The job I lost

I had to resign from my last job in late 2008 for health reasons - although I was lucky enough to receive some unemployment benefits, I still have not been able to find a job. It does not look good to prospective employers to have such a gap in unemployment. I have a family member paying all my bills and am very grateful, but it is very stressful. I am praying that a new unemployment bill will get passed soon while I am looking for a job. I also have disabilities which make it difficult to get a job.

What it's like being unemployed

It is depressing, saddening and a loss of dignity to be without a job. I am over 40 and it seems like all the jobs go to young people. I feel like I am never dressed right, say the wrong things and generally am not enthusiastic enough at each interview- this has a lot to do with my depression. Being unemployed makes you feel worthless and less of an individual. Employers give you hope and then let you down after numerous interviews.

Advice

  • I have tried to investigate all prospects of ways to get resources to help my situation. Being unemployed is awful.
