The job I lost
I'm a Veteran of 22 years of service with the US Army and was discharged in Aug 2001, and was 70% disabled. However I'm not a person looking for a handout I took the Voc-Rehab training and acquired my teaching license in building trades area.
For the past two years I was a teacher in the Building Trades program. In March of 2010, I was called in to the district office and was told that the program was being cut due to budget reasons.
Great way to be laid off, The only (Military) and a Disabled Veteran to lose his job and the only teacher in the district to be laid off.
What it's like being unemployed
I re-trained into the teaching field. A job I thought I could make a difference in training our students for job skills they could use in the workforce.
I was amazed at the program being cut and being laid off and dishearted. Why would you cut a program that prepared students in a job skill for tomorrows workforce.
I tried to explain this to our school board members, and I even offered to take a $25,000 cut in pay just to be allowed to teach our students as a part-time teacher, until the school budget would support the program full time again.
How could the school lose with a offer like that? They turned my offer down and laid me off anyway.
