The job I lost

Lead nurse in state prison. Lost job because I discovered and reported violations of nurse practice act, insubordination, and patient neglect. Employer retaliated, state esc found corrections was not justified in termination and got unemployment benefits. To add insult to injury wife left and stole bulk of assets, leaving little money. Lawyers expensive, system very slow and uncaring. Job market terrible, pay low if you do find job. Employers have unrealistic expectations compared to pay, for example want Masters degree and many years experience, but offer low pay. Legal system fails to protect.

What it's like being unemployed

Demeaning. Demoralizing. Depressing. It truly is who you know, not so much what you know. Depression is a real problem, especially when you know you lost a job due to no fault of your own. Dishonesty is rampant in state government in north carolina. Looking to the future, I see an economy not markedly improving, taxes increasing, government growing; all to the detriment of job creation. With a small job market, employers will increasingly offer less to the employee, and there is no loyalty at all.

Advice

  • Retrain in a field that is a non-dependent profession. If you cannot bill directly for your services, it is a dependent profession. Tap into services that bill insurance companies. If you have resources retrain, update skills. Try to be confident, or at least appear that way. Be very wary of "work friends", and what you say to or around them, they will cut your throat.
