How I was discriminated against
I worked for a company for 30 years. In my area for 20 years. I filled in as supervisor during my supervisor's absences, sometimes for as long as 3 months. I transferred to a new plant and helped set up and organize, yet when an opening came for supervisor and against the suggestions of the original plant I was passed up for the position. A retired military was hired off the street with no experience in this line of work.
This particular company did this to many older workers, apparently if you were a retired military person you were good as gold. And probably would work for less because of your pension.
What it's like being an older or younger job seeker
I have the impression that people feel we will ask for more money because of our experience and a younger person can be hired cheaper and trained. But if you are unemployed any income is better than none.
Lessons Learned
- Keep a low profile.
- Don't highlight all you know or how well you can do a job.
- Swallow your pride and all your years of hard work if you want a job.
