Planned ParenthoodMy Review
I worked for several Planned Parenthood clinics in the San Francisco Bay Area, and I had a fantastic experience serving the community. It's a great company if you're looking to strap up your boots and gain valuable clinical experience, quickly. That said, there are several significant downsides to working for the company as well so I give them a 3-star rating.
Pros: 1. To work for Planned Parenthood is to do good things for people who really need and value the extra help. Employees are given the chance to help provide high quality reproductive health care and information to every woman, regardless of if they have insurance or speak English.
2. Shifts are flexible and people it's easy to swap and cover hours with other employees.
3. Planned Parenthood clinics are busy, busy... it's a great pace for those who like to work hard and learn quickly.
Cons: 1. There is poor and little training for employees who are doing things like counseling patients, taking blood pressure, etc. Much of this is left to on-the-job learning and that can be risky when dealing with sensitive health care issues.
2. As with most not-for-profits, these are high stress roles. There are often more patients than there are staff to support them, and the pay is low and perks are few, so it's hard for them to attract and keep talented staff. Also burn out is a common issue--many of the old-timer employees seem a bit jaded.
3. Few opportunities for advancement. Budgets are tight, there are few manager roles and managers stay put. So, really there isn't much room for advancement.
