Are you quitting your job to travel abroad? Congratulations! That's a big, exciting decision. What's the best way to notify your employer that you're moving on. As with any resignation, it's best to write a letter or send an email to your employer to formally resign from your position.

Why Write a Resignation Letter

Writing a resignation letter is one of the final impressions you'll leave on your employer—aim to make it a good one. Along with being an important professional gesture, a resignation letter serves as your official notice. Writing this letter or email helps ease the transition for both you and your manager.

What to Include in Your Resignation Letter

The details of your departure from the company. Keep the letter brief and to the point.  You don't need to include much more than the fact that you're resigning and when your last day or work will be.

Your last day of work. Along with stating that you will be resigning, the most important information to share is your last day of employment. (Ideally, provide the company with at least two weeks' notice.)

Your thanks and appreciation. As well, it's customary to express appreciation for the opportunity.

An offer of help. While it's common to offer to help during the transition, it's not required. If you're willing and have the availability to assist, you can offer. However, you're not obligated.

Keep Your Letter Positive

A resignation letter is a formal document that may be placed in your employee file and consulted if the company is ever asked to provide you with a reference. Ultimately, this is an HR communication, so it's best to be professional and positive in your message.

Note

Avoid complaints and criticisms in your resignation letter.
