Ask a career expert about the most effective job search strategy and you will universally hear the response - networking. Perhaps the most valuable networking resource for college grads, regardless of how long ago they graduated, is the alumni body from their school.
The career services and/or alumni affairs office for your college may have a database of alumni volunteers. Mention that you are looking to contact them for information and advice about your career or job search. Typically, you can search for contacts by geographic area and career field. Check out LinkedIn's tool you can use to access employment information for alumni from your college.
Once you have a list, you can approach them for help, but that's only the tip of the iceberg. Most schools offer networking programs and other events where you can meeting with alumni in-person. You can use LinkedIn and social media to connect. Your school may have a LinkedIn Group or Facebook Page for alumni and you can also connect individually.
