The job I lost
I lost my job in WA when the university I was working for moved our entire department to a different campus a long way away. I was laid off. After a few months I decided I needed to look elsewhere for employment so I moved to CA. Still looking for work but just received notice that my state unemployment has run out. They told me to contact the CA UI Office. For my particular situation (living in a new state) I am not allowed to just file online. The CA website instructed that I must call their office. I've been calling repeatedly for three days now and I just get the recording that they are too busy & then it hangs up
What it's like being unemployed
It sucks. I'm very qualified for every job I've applied for, but so is everyone else I guess. Now I'm losing unemployment and can't get through the CA agency. An additional problem is that most of the job prospects I get are through recruiters and are 6 month temp to perm. That means no benefits for at least 6 months. I'd still take the job if offered, but paying for COBRA takes out a huge chunk of any salary.
- Don't give them your age
- Don't give them too much experience or they'll pass on you as over qualified
