We Can't Sleep at Night

My beautiful baby girl

The job I lost

My husband and I lost our means of employment in December 2008, my husband lost his job due to a lay off of over 40,000 workers in Manhattan NY, a few weeks before our daughter was born.

Once our daughter was born due to a lot of painful complications I was unable to work for the first 3 months of my daughters life, I was in and out of the hospital.

When I was capable of working again I found myself unemployed. My husband and I had to leave NY from being unable to support our family from cost of living. We moved out of state in the promise of a job position offered to my husband in NC, that fell through.

What it's like being unemployed

We now find ourselves in an unfamiliar city, bills to pay, a daughter to feed and care for, with a faulty job offer that did not go through. After using up savings to cover our cost of living while in search for another job position, we have gotten to the point of having to cut almost every cost we can just to scrape by and continue to feed our family and keep a roof over our heads.

We can't sleep at night in fear that the next morning we will be unable to pay our bills due to loss of unemployment and end up in a shelter or on the street with out a home to keep our daughter safe, its incredibly scary for so many in this manner. Families that have children I cry for because I feel the pain of fear every day, night, moment, and breath that I take.

I pray every night to find work the next day in any way to be able to feel secure in providing a good life for my daughter. I cant stress how much axienty and pain it has caused my marriage, my family, and many other families I know. I just want to be a good mother and provider, my husband wants to be a good provider and father, everytime we seem to find a small peice of happiness fear plagues our moment of light.

Sometimes we feel shame for not being able to accomplish even the smallest means of work, the sad truth is no one seems to want to hire, no matter how good a resume is or experience.... even the small positions at grocery stores dont seem to be hiring..... application after application, it becomes incredibly frustrating and scary to come up empty everytime for weeks....the days and weeks waiting while applying more and more just seem to pass by praying that we will find anything before we are no longer able to receive unemployment.

There are so many that feel the way I do, and hurt as a parent for the fear of not being a good parent because you cannot provide despite your efforts. I pray to not feel this pain anymore and to find a way to provide for my family again.

Advice

  • Do everything and anything to find work, be it walk into a possible job position and present yourself with ethic and possitive attitude, or be it apply for every online job position out there, theres so many ways to try... It's frustrating but keep trying...
