The job I lost
I was working in Orlando, Florida and jobs were getting hit hard. I was working with the School Board in Orange County when mine and 13 other individuals lost their jobs so that teachers could keep theirs. At first, I wasn't upset because I am all for teachers keeping their jobs. But I haven't gotten a job since then. It's December 31st of 2010 and I lost that job May 7th of 2009.
What it's like being unemployed
Being unemployed had been really hard on me because I am the kind of person who is a work-a-holic (as my mother would describe me). Because I lost my job, I lost my car. I had to move back to Georgia with my mother and four-year-old son. I depend on my mother for her car, to take my son to school and then take her to work. Because of this, I cannot find a job to fit the hours in which I have a car. Have I been looked down upon for this? Of course I have. Now it's winter and paying bills at normal rates was tough but add in using extra to just keep the house warm, and you wind up paying over a hundred dollars extra and now you're borrowing from Peter to pay Paul. This is not where I saw myself when I was 26 and I am scared for my son.
Advice
- I don't really know what to say about being unemployed. I have learned that job stability is no longer available. You think that working in a company for 6 months will guarantee you ... but people are getting laid off every day, no matter how long they've been there. When you have a job, save save save. Because you never know when you're going to need the money to pay your bills.
