No Job is Stable

From Betty Hunt-Orsargos

The job I lost

I was working at a pediatrics office in Michigan when I had to take medical leave for a major abdominal surgery. The Dr. had taken me off work for the 2 weeks prior to surgery, therefore resulting in my medical leave being 8 weeks instead of 6 weeks. I was supposed to return to work on December 3, 2007 but on November 30, 2007 my boss called and told me not to return, I was supposedly let go because of performance. I had never been written up or even called to the office for disciplinary reasons. I was on short term disabiblity which I helped to pay for out of my checks weekly. I have been unemployed since that date.

What it's like being unemployed

It is very difficult being unemployed. I have 2 children one lives with my husband and myself and the other visits every other weekend and 6 weeks in the summer.

I'm thankful that my husband works but it is still difficult to provide on one income. We have had shut off notices on all utilities and car payments have been 2 to 3 months behind as well as having car insurance cancelled at times. It's very frustrating and stressful to fear having these things shut off or having your car repossessed.

Advice

  • I've learned to set back money when your able to, you never know when things will get bad for you.
  • I've also learned that NO job is stable, and employers can do as they please because of the "at will employment".
  • I did nothing wrong and was let go for reasons unknown. I had an illness that needed attention and was fired for taking care of my personal health issues.
