The job I lost
Was a PC repair tech at a school system. The job was getting stressful anyway due to a boss who was worried his total incompetence would be found out. He drove us nuts with his micromanaging every little job. I used to spend hours going back and forth with emails answering 20 questions about each job. I think he fired me just to create more fear in the other techs.
What it's like being unemployed
Actually, not bad. When you're not working your expenses are reduced so unemployment checks go about as far as a regular paycheck. Of course being single and not having any car payments, house payments or credit cards helps. I long ago decided I would never buy anything on credit.
So now I'm saving some of my income to buy a used sailboat which I will try out living aboard to see if it's a lifestyle I like. I'll be 62 in Nov and will get SS and a small State pension, enough to get by on. Finding a job in my field at my age is pretty hopeless.
But I'm in good health (no insurance) and see a whole new life about to start for me.
Advice
- PAY OFF DEBTS!
- Buy only what you can pay for.
- Don't let them harrass you into quitting, make 'em fire you.
- Try living on less - figure out what you'll have to live on in retirement and start cutting back to that amount now.
- Cancel your cable - read a book, rent a movie.
