The job I lost
I worked for a Head Start program for 11 years and lost my job when they did not receive funding. I dedicated 11 years and held multiple responsibilities as the Department Administrative Assistant.
What it's like being unemployed
I am a single parent to two children, struggling to make my $1,100 rent every month. My unemployment ran out July 4, 2010. I had to take my daughter out of private school even though she had a partial scholarship because I could not afford my part of the tuition which wasnt much compared to the cost of this school. I am struggling to just make ends meet.
I have put my resume out into hundreds of job sites and still cannot find a job. I am a registered full time student and was told I do not qualify for any extensions. I can't eat or sleep worrying how I will make ends meet. I have a 16 and 12 year old and only receive $221 in food stamps. That gets us by for 2 weeks. I cry daily because of the anxiety of not knowing where my next dollar is coming from.
I have worked everyday of my life since I was 14 years old. I am so saddened and scared of what will happen to me and my children if an extension is not granted.
Advice
- I don't know why they wouldnt grant extensions to avoid sending people to welfare. It would cost more if people are on welfare because then rent, medicaid and health insurance have to be given and it will cost the state more.
