I Was Falsely Accused of Using Drugs

The job I lost

I am a registered nurse. My story begins about 3 years ago. I worked for a home health agency locally. My supervisor showed in many ways she did not like me personally; reason totally unknown to me. When I was let go she was very angry and, just to be vindictive, I guess, she soon after called the Oklahoma State Board of nursing and falsely accused me of coming to work "high", using drugs. I got a call from a Board Investigator and the nightmare began. They started an investigation, made me start drug testing randomly every month, which I had to pay for, take classes which I had to pay for, pay a $500 fine, etc.

What it's like being unemployed

Around October 30th, 2009, my daughter contracted H1N1 Flu and was very ill, had to be taken to the emergency room. I forgot to call that day to see if I had to go take a random urine drug screen. (I had to call every single day on this.) I was supposed to and missed a drug screen. The Board considered this a positive drug screen and immediatley suspended my nursing license causing me to lose my job. (Never mind that I had to go to a Licensed Drug counselor, someone they had chosen, and be tested; results showed I did not have a drug problem, and did not need any further testing or "discipline".) From that day it has been a living nightmare. I have had to move, had cut off notices on utilities, no money to pay any of my bills, etc. It has literally ruined my life. I have been unimployeed for 13 months now. I did get unemployment benefits so that helped immensly. I've had to borrow from relatives, which has caused hard feelings, even to the point that I haven't spoken to my father, sister, brother in months. I wouldn't wish this experience on my worst enemy. (one thing I didn't mention earlier is that the occurance my ex-boss was referring to was a time I had had difficulty sleeping and had taken Benadryl the night before and it made me sleepy and groggy the next day. That was the time I was "high at work!!)

Advice

  • I did go to a financial class called Financial Peace University by Dave Ramsey. It has helped me to live on a budget and make smarter financial decisions. I continue to look for work. (My unemployment benefits have currently stopped due to Congress indecision on extending benefits.) I continually hope and pray for the best. I am a single mom with a 7 year old daughter who doesn't understand why mommy doesn't have money now to do things she wants much less to live on. I do have advise for nurses. Watch your back!! You can be accused of something by a disgruntled coworker or boss even if they have no proof!!!
