Can No Longer Bank on Banking

Share Your Story: Share Your Unemployment Story

The job I lost

I lost my job back in November 2008 despite being a top producer for the company. I have worked in the financial services industry for 24 years. Most recently I held a credit analyst position for automobile financing. Needless to say the auto industry was hit hard and while the auto makers and banks received huge amounts of bailout money the employees received a box to pack their personal belongings.

What it's like being unemployed

Being unemployed stinks. I get up every morning, sign on the computer and search for jobs. I check my email in hopes that for once I will receive a positive response from an employer as opposed to rejection letters I often receive. Most employers don't even bother to respond at all. Would you believe a recruiter had the nerve to ask me if I'd been in jail for the last year. It is tuff enough for me to handle being out of work for so long, the last thing I need is a comment like that I guess this guy felt the need to add salt to the wound.

Advice

  • Stay positive, believe that things happen for a reason. Keep reminding yourself that you're not alone. Network as much as possible and don't allow yourself to be forgotten.
  • Get your resume in the hands of the decision makers not just some HR rep that screens resumes just for fancy catch words.
