The job I lost

I have 24 years experience as a construction worker, window installer, beam setter, roofing installer, and fascia board hanger. I also have experience in floor sheathing and framing, patio covers, retaining walls and lumber fencing. I been in the construction field long enough to learn the trade very well in both areas - home and comercial.

What it's like being unemployed

Since my company closed its doors 2 years ago, I've being looking into other fields without any results. I even enrolled in a vocational welding school, earned 2 certifications, and at the present I'm finishing a third one - still no results. There are not enough jobs out there for the huge number of unemployed people.

I'm a father of 3 children, in my mid 40's, and competing against younger workers for minimum wage is a challenge for us of older ages. First I lost my job, then lost my car, after that my house went into foreclosure, now my UI FED-EX stopped on June 12th. Well, all that I can say is that this is the end of the road for me and my family - my dream has come to be a real nightmare.

Advice

  • Get all the help you can get.
  • Cut all the corners on unnecessary bills.
  • Hold on tight, it's going to get worse.
