How I was discriminated against
I worked as a cashier for an Exxon station which is owned by Story Distributing Company in Bozeman, Montana. I had been there a little over 3 years... was a good employee... did more than my share of work and when the owners bought a few more stores they became corporate and hired this woman to run the stores. For no reason I was laid off last Jan. and so was Sue. W@e were both 60 and older and on social security... we had been there longer than other employees so we know it was because of our age and circumstances and it was not fair.
What it's like being an older or younger job seeker
I turned 61 in july and i have been trying to find a part time job since last Jan. altho there aren't many jobs available in my small town right now...i still feel my age is a factor in not being hired.
Lessons Learned
- i took my case to the Human Relations Board in Helena, Mt. and I did win a small fee... I should not have settled the case but the reason I did was I didn't want to drag my boss and a few co workers into court... as my boss was under so much stress trying to hold on to her mgr. position and the corp. person was trying to get rid of her too. My boss ended up quitting due to the stress and had I known that I would not have settled my case so quickly.
