How I was discriminated against
I am currently working through a contract position for a BIG Bank, in a position that directly maps to my background and experience for over 30+ years. I have an advanced degree, plus 5 professional designations, again directly related to my background and experience.
And when I applied for the Fulltime opportunity that was posted for my postion, I was told that I was not qualified. I almost blurted out in laughter, "Are you kidding me?"
Anyway, in actuallity I am over-qualifed, as the BIG Banks tend to specialize and segment or silo functions within a specific disipline. Go figure......?????
What it's like being an older or younger job seeker
It is a bit insulting to be treated as if all of a sudden my years of experience have just vanished..... I'm a contractor fine, no need to treat me disrespectfully, allow me to be the expert in my discipline that I am, but for God's sake don't demean me by telling me that I am not qualified. Allow me to keep my dignity, please.
Lessons Learned
- I think that the BIG banks or at least this one, are not keen on employees for hire over the age of 50, at least not in this group. It is what it is, I am now looking at regional banks and/or other industry and placing my search away from the BIG Banks - unfortunately they are the big employers in my community.
