I Thought it Was Illegal to Ask Your Date of Birth

From Pat Cooper

How I was discriminated against

I worked as a Legal Secretary with a part-time job as a bail bondsman. After being laid off, I began sending out resumes for jobs that I qualified for and for $7.25 minimum wage jobs.

At the job locations for the minimum wage jobs, I noticed they were filled with young people just out of high school. I have submitted numerous applications and resumes and have never had an interview. I thought it was illegal to ask a person their date of birth, year graduated from high school etc. on a job application but the state of South Carolina has those questions on all their job applications. I just turned 62.

What it's like being an older or younger job seeker

It is frustrating. I've worked since I was 18 and now, at 62, no one wants me. I need to work as the early social security I will be getting as of September 8th will not pay all my bills.

I have no medical insurance now and have always had medical insurance. At a time I need it most - nothing. People who are not at retirement age should get jobs over high school graduates as they have mortgages, car payments, credit card payments, etc. Give them a chance to get things paid off and not lose everything they have worked for their whole lives.

Lessons Learned

  • Employers want a young person whom they feel will stay with their company for many years and make a career of it and not older people whom they feel would only be working 5-7 years.
  • Keep trying, you may find an employer who is older and understands your plight.
  • Try to find something you like to do and be your own boss.
