Employers Don't Hire Older, College-Educated Workers

How I was discriminated against

I was laid off and hit the 50 year mark looking for work. I was shopping in the store and mentioned to the clerk when he asked for a donation that I was looking for work. He told me he knew the old Holiday inn --now Quality Inn, Stafford VA -- was hiring a front desk clerk right down the road. I went in and waited patiently while the young clerk who did not look a day over 20 helped the customer. She told me that they were not hiring. I told her "That is funny, I was told you were; would you apply on line?" She then told me "No, all our applications are in person. We only hire young college students or high school."

What it's like being an older or younger job seeker

It makes you want to start your own company

It is very frustrating when there are not enough jobs for college educated older people.

When I was working often would get drill from co-workers trying to figure out how old I was. I look about 15-20 years younger. When they find out how old I am they are aghast. Get a grip! 40 is not fatal.

Lessons Learned

  • Where I live, it is at will employment. Discrimination is allowed.
  • I have worked where they discriminate for your gender. When I worked at La Petite Childcare they refused to hire males to work with kids.
  • Start your own company
  • Only hire old educated people
