How I was discriminated against
I am in my 60's and receiving Social Security. I became unemployed in Dec. 08 when I was let go by the owner of a hardware store where I worked. He hired a younger person for 40 hours and then let me go from my part time 25 hr a week job. There is absolutely nothing you can do in New York State because it is an "at will" state and employers are allowed to dismiss any employee any time without cause. This law is why employers can fire anyone they want without fear of being charged with discrimination. I am college educated and cannot even get a job in the local supermarket stocking shelves for the minimum wage!
What it's like being an older or younger job seeker
Being older used to mean more experienced and more mature. Now it means "go away and die". IT means "get out of my way old man!The younger mangers in the workforce today do not hold the same values as their parents generation. They are the "it's all about ME" generation and could care less about anyone in the prior generation and above. They are selfish and self centered and just want to sweep elders under the rug and out of sight.
Lessons Learned
- Don't expect anyone from the younger generations to hire you. They don't even want you in their workforce and won't do a thing to help you get back into it.
