Group Interview That Almost Made Me Cry

Share Your Story: Bad Interview Stories

From Sheila McKean

What Happened During The Interview?

During the interview, they put us at banquet tables and we were interviewed during lunch in front of all of our peers. We may have had one short private interview, but that was it. I tried to make chit chat with the other interviewees, but they wouldn't speak with me. Most of them seem to know each other so I felt very alienated and alone. I was very excluded and didn't fit in.

How Did the Interview Turn Out?

Everyone was so rude that it was no surprise that I almost started crying by the end. I know I had tears in my eyes.

I was then called into someone's office and they proceeded to tell me exactly what they thought of me.

They paid me in cash on the spot for my round trip mileage, which was about three hours away from my college campus (one way).

I don't recall ever hearing from them again until recently. Coincidence, yes, I'm sure. I can't believe they'd have records that far back.

Advice

  • Don't be afraid to ask questions before accepting an interview. Remember, you are interviewing them too. As a college student on a limited budget in the winter in the north, this employer had very deep pockets and should have offered to pay for a hotel room for me for the night before. To expect me to be at an interview at 8 or 9am in the winter after driving three hours was unreasonable. I should be glad I didn't get the job. This company has a bad reputation in the community today for treating its customers badly. Also know that this interview was with my #1 or #2 dream company to work for & my #1 job choice
