Don't Brag About Things That Don't Support the Company's Goals

Share Your Story: Bad Interview Stories

From Don Goodman, Career Expert

What Happened During The Interview?

Many years ago I interviewed a potential sales candidate who had just left his last job. I asked him what he was most proud of in his last position and this is what he said.

"I am proud that I just closed a deal with a client, even though the product won't do what they want it to do".

How Did the Interview Turn Out?

I was flabbergasted and even asked him follow-up questions to make sure I was hearing him correctly.

“What do you think will happen when your old company finds out”?

“Not my problem,” he retored, “I left the company”.

Clearly I would not hire someone who is proud of ripping off the customer.

Advice

  • Do not brag about things that do not support the hiring company's goals.
