Why I Was Fired
Got a job in operations for a small shipping company. Everything was going great, I was working for the owners son. Son goes out of town and father comes in to cover for him. Owner asked me to do something that I considered semi-illegal. Even though there were many more circumstances that I haven't gone into, this was basically the end of my relationship with the owner. I remained in this job for eight more months but it was apparent that there was a grudge. I was terminated just after New Years day for reasons that are still unclear to me.
What Being Fired Has Been Like
Being fired leaves you feeling like a failure. Getting a job these days is not easy. I felt so lucky just to find a job that I couldn't complain about the poor benefits offered by this company. Here is one example. They recognized only three holidays, Thanksgiving day, Christmas day and New Years day. Because Christmas and New Years fell on Saturday they were not recognized as holidays (Saturday was a scheduled day off). Oddly enough, the owners son took every holiday off, including the normal holidays that this company didn't recognize.
Advice
- Here is my advice. When you first realize that things may not be going your way, start a job search immediately. It is easier and better to change jobs while you still have one. Don't try to hold on to a job when you know you are unhappy.
