Why I Was Fired
I went to work at an insurance company. Just out of college and with a degree in communications there were many jobs and I was qualified for. I was hired as a claim processor. I didn't need any experience and it would be a skill I could always use. For two weeks I dreamed of someday becoming a supervisor and eventually a manager for that company. The problem was that I wasn't learning my job fast enough. I was called in and told I was being let go. Seven years later I did a temp job for this company--in another city and they offered me a position. I told them of my firing. They hired me anyway.
What Being Fired Has Been Like
I never had a career. I allowed that experience to be so devastating to me. I've had probably 30 jobs since then. As a young woman I considered I was the absolute worst worker. I've had 6 years of college--a BA and two more years and in my late 50s still doing grunt work. I still have problem dealing with it, even though the company hired me back 7 years later. I'm still afraid I can't learn a job.
Advice
- If you get fired don't let it affect your plans for a career. Everyone sooner or later gets fired.
- Don't hate the company that fired you--you might find yourself working for them in the future.
