Why I Was Fired
For involving my employer's name and the word "crackhead" in the same sentence on Facebook.
What Being Fired Has Been Like
It was awful. I won't say where I was fired from because I was given compensation for being fired. Where I worked was like heaven. You had the power to do what you wished, wear what you wished, and move up in the company and in pay within 3 months of starting. I wasn't even through training when I got the boot.
A co-worker posted something about another on Facebook calling him a name because he was harassed during the work day. I commented and was fired the next day, as was the man who wrote the status. However, the harasser is still fully employed with the company.
It's awful going from a company who provides 401k, full health benefits, full time hours, and incredible pay to absolutely nothing. Unfortunately, I live in the city with THE WORST job market of the US so finding a job hasn't happened for me.
Advice
- If you work for a big company, it's better for you to not even have a social networking profile. It's just a way for them to keep tabs on you outside of work.
- If you do decide to keep your social networking sites, don't EVER mention them, not even in a good way. People's comments can get you fired, as well.
