Why I Was Fired
I started dating a coworker and was fired because of it. There was no policy about inter-office dating, but after we had dated for a few months, our boss found out and didn't like it. They told me they fired me because my college class schedule interfered with my work hours, but that simply wasn't true. A few days after I was fired, word got back to me that everyone around the office knew it was because I had started dating my then boyfriend/now husband. He quit shortly after.
What Being Fired Has Been Like
I was devestated at first, even though I didn't really like the job that much. I've been able to be hired since then, so it definitely wasn't the end of the world like I thought it would be. I never lie about it during interviews or on applications, and I've never had a potential employer site that as a reason they decided not to hire me. I took some time off to finish my semester after being fired, and was then hired for the first job I applied for after that.
- It can be very overwhelming, especially when it comes out of nowhere, but life goes on. Just take it a day at a time. This happened six years ago and I still get a little angry when I think about it, but then I think about how if I'd never been there, or had never gone out with my coworker, I never would have met/married my husband. Find the silver lining and hold on to it. No matter how unfair it seems, we all have our share of tough breaks, and we just have to learn how to live with them. Remember, what's done is done, and move on.
