Definition: Work at home transcriptionists are usually independent contractors who transcribe and edit recorded reports onto their home computer.

Medical transcriptionists convert doctor recorded reports into typed reports. It is important for medical transcriptionists to be familiar with medical terms, as well as legal standards and requirements that apply to health records. In most cases, companies prefer to hire candidates with previous experience or have a diploma or associates degree in medical transcription.

Legal transcriptionists create and edit documents from legal professional's dictations. Although no formal training is needed to become a legal transcriptionist, it is important to have a solid understanding of legal terminology and to have good command of the English language.
