Long Term Unemployed

Long Term Unemployed

Definition: Workers who have been unemployed for 27 weeks or more are considered long term unemployed workers. The recession that began in December 2007 led to record breaking rates of long term unemployment with a long term unemployment rate of almost 40% and the highest unemployment rates in thirty years.

Because of the increase in long term unemployment, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) raised the upper limit on how long someone can be listed as having been jobless from two years to five years.
