Unemployment Rate Definition


The monthly unemployment rate (a percentage of unemployed workers) is calculated based on a monthly sample survey conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics called the Current Population Survey (CPS) to measure the extent of unemployment in the U.S.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reports the unemployment rate on a monthly basis. Unemployment statistics data is released on the first Friday of the month for the previous month.
