Nearly every major brand has a social media presence, and someone has to manage all those posts, tweets, stories, and photos. Enter the social media manager, the professional who monitors and runs the company’s social networks.

When applying for a social media manager position, you will need to highlight your knowledge of social media accounts, trends, and analytics on your resume. Include specific details from the positions you have held that quantify your successes. Percentage increases in views, shares, and tweets will highlight your effectiveness and competence.

What to Include in Your Resume and Cover Letter

Be sure to place your strongest qualifications first in both documents. Then, follow up with the other important, but less specifically related skills. As you gain experience in your field, you will find it easier to tailor your application for each opportunity you apply for.

When you are less experienced, it’s important that you make the connection clear between what you have done, and how it relates to your qualifications for the position.

Show why you're qualified for the job. Use highlights from your work experience that match the qualifications the employer has listed in the job position to showcase your most relevant skills.

In your cover letter, reinforce the skills, experience, and education listed on your resume. You can add anecdotes and details that you didn’t have room to include in your resume, but that show clearly how well qualified you are for the job.

Show your passion. Your cover letter is also your opportunity to express your enthusiasm for the position, and mention reasons you think you would be a good fit.

Writing Effective Resumes and Cover Letters

Match your resume to the job. For each position to which you apply, carefully read and take the time to analyze what the hiring manager is looking for in a strong candidate. Your resume should reflect your social media skills and experiences that most closely match the ones the employer is seeking for this particular job.

Use templates and examples. It can be helpful to review examples of resumes and cover letters for a social media job, to help you to formulate your own. You may find it helpful to use a template as well, to help format your documents, and make sure that you include all the information required. Just be sure to customize your cover letter and resume for every position.

Sending an email cover letter. If you're sending your cover letter via email, list your name and the job title in the subject line of the email message:

Subject: Social Media Manager - Your Name

Include your contact information in your email signature, and don't list the employer contact information. Start your email message with the salutation.

Lisa Lee
Operations Manager
Sunshine Hospital
123 Business Street
Business City, NY 54321

Dear Ms. Lee,

I would like to express my strong interest in the Social Media Manager position at Sunshine Hospital, as listed on Dice.com. I am confident that my previous success as a social media manager, as well as my strong communication and collaboration skills, make me an ideal candidate for the position.

I have ten years of experience in marketing, and I have spent the last five of those years as a Social Media Manager. My most recent campaign for Acme Corp. led to an increase of over 35% in inbound traffic for Acme’s website. Through a combination of creative social media marketing strategies and thorough monitoring of success through media analytics, KPIs, and dashboards, I can assure your company a similar rate of success.

You state in your job application that you are looking for a Social Media Manager who is able to collaborate with others, particularly your upper management and sales staff. As Marketing Coordinator for Pioneer Health Systems, I held quarterly meetings in which I presented marketing reports and sought analysis and feedback from the entire team. As Social Media Manager for Jones & Jones PR Firm, I collaborated with the Director of Marketing and Producer of every company for which I worked.

I am confident that my experience, particularly within the field of healthcare marketing, as well as my ability to collaborate and communicate, make me a strong candidate for the Social Media Manager at Sunshine Hospital. I have enclosed my resume and will contact you next week to see if we might find a time to speak together. Thank you so much for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Becky Applicant
