Rosemary Blandford, Founder and Creator of RosieKnows.com, whose mission is to ensure people of all ages will have the skills necessary to utilize technology to get the most out of life, shares her insight into how Skype can help with your job search.

Rosie answered my questions on how Skype can benefit job seekers and how Skype is being used for employment purposes. She also shared her tips for job seekers using Skype.

How can Skype help me with my job search?

Skype can allow you to connect to a wide variety of other Skype users throughout the world. Networking is a big part of any job search and Skype allows members one additional option to keep them connected with potential leads. Additionally, when a person to person networking session is not an option, a video-chat may fill that gap.

How do I set up a Skype account?

Setting up an account is easy. Skype prompts you through the set up process. First, you will need to go to Skype.com and download the appropriate application for your computer. After filling in the appropriate text fields you will receive an account usually identified by your name. In order to use Skype for phone calls you will need to have a working microphone and webcam for video chats. Detailed lessons on how to use Skype are available at rosieknows.com.

Will I get a personal phone number I can include on my resume?

Using the free service, a Skype name will allow you to connect with other Skype users. If you want a traditional phone number to include on your resume then you will need to pay a fee.

How can I call contacts and recruiters who don't have Skype?

For a fee, you can call landlines and cell phones.

How about interviewing? Are job interviews being conducted via Skype?

Job interviews via Skype are on the rise and not just for international interviews. The cost of fuel and the fact we are in a recession makes Skype a reasonable alternative to in-person interviews.

Do you have any tips and advice for job seekers who are interested in using Skype?

Practice using Skype with friends before you actually need to use it for a job placement or networking opportunity. You want to make sure you can troubleshoot if there are any technical problems. Dress as you would for any other job interview. Concentrate on speaking clearly while maintaining good eye contact and don't forget to smile.
