Definition: Some states, including California, Hawaii, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island have state sponsored short term disability insurance. These programs are typically very short-term and the benefit amounts are low. In New York, for example, the weekly benefit amount is 50% of the employee's average weekly wage, up to $170 for a maximum of 26 weeks.
In addition to state disability insurance coverage, some employers provide disability coverage (short-term disability and/or long-term disability). If if you are unable to work, your first step should be to ask your employer what insurance your employer provides. If you have your own disability coverage, file a claim with that insurance company as well.
In all cases, you will need to complete applications for disability coverage and be certified by a doctor as unable to perform your normal job duties.
