Hazard Pay

By Alison Doyle, About.com Guide

Definition: Hazard pay means additional pay for performing hazardous duty or work involving physical hardship. Work duty that causes extreme physical discomfort and distress which is not adequately alleviated by protective devices is deemed to impose a physical hardship.

The amount of the pay and the conditions under which it will be paid are determined by the employer, not regulated by law. Hazardous duty pay is typically paid only for the hours during which the employee is working under hazardous conditions.
