Receptionists operate on the front lines for organizations as the initial point of contact for visitors and callers. Receptionists greet individuals entering an establishment, share information about the organization and direct visitors to their destinations. They often answer phones, direct calls to appropriate staff and schedule appointments. Receptionists may sort incoming mail and route it to the proper recipients.

Receptionists may carry out other administrative duties such as copying, filing, generating documents, arranging travel, staffing events and processing travel reports. Receptionists work in abroad range of organizations but are most common in service oriented businesses like law offices, accounting firms, medical/dental practices, health clubs and hospitals.

Receptionist Salaries

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, receptionists earned an average of $25,990 in 2012. The bottom 10% earned less than $18,120, while the top 10% earned at least $37,770.
