Job titles are an important component of job searching and career activities. Job titles show your progression up the career ladder on your resume and during job interviews. In addition, job titles can be used as a tool to search for jobs in your industry and at your level.

Job Titles on Resumes

When you're applying for a mid-career or an upper-level job, employers will review your resume to determine your career path and how that track fits with their needs.

For example, when an applicant has progressed from a software engineer to a senior developer to a chief technology officer, most likely with other jobs in between those, the hiring manager will see that the candidate has been promoted, changed jobs, or otherwise advanced their career.

Your current job title not only reflects the jobs you've held, it also provides companies with information on your career level. For example, if your job title includes the words "supervisor" or "manager" it will indicate that you have management experience.

Job Titles as a Job Search Tool

When you are seeking employment, one way to search for jobs is by job title. If you're seeking, for example, a job similar to the last or current job or for a job that's a step up, you can use job search engine SimplyHired's Advance Search option to search for keywords with the job title:

  • Visit SimplyHired's Advanced Search page
  • Enter keywords from a job title in the Within job title box
  • Click Search Jobs

Job Search engine LinkUp enables users to search by keyword and phrase and to exclude certain words from a job title.

  • Visit LinkUp's Advanced Search page
  • Enter keywords from a job title in the keywords:, exact phrase: or not these words: box(es)
  • Check the job title box(es)
  • Click Search Jobs

Need Some Ideas?

When you're not sure what job titles to search for, use job search engine Indeed.com's Title tool to find a list of related titles. Search by keyword (a word from a job title or a related term), then click on title on the left side of the page to see a list of job titles related to your search term.

For example, when I searched using the term "editorial manager" I got a list of editorial positions. I then clicked on title and more to see a list of the following related jobs:

  • Marketing Manager
  • Social Media Manager
  • Communications Manager
  • Product Manager
  • Project Manager
  • Public Relations Manager
  • Marketing Communications Manager
  • Web Content Manager
  • Social Media Coordinator
