Freedom of Information Act of 1966

By , About.com Guide

Definition: The Freedom of Information Act of 1966 regulates the dispensing of information within government agencies.

With the exception of medical information and personnel files, most government records can be accessed by individuals with proper authorization (and even medical and personnel information can be dispensed if the right to know outweighs the individual’s right to privacy).

The person receiving the information must have a legitimate reason, with no malice intended.
