If you're applying for a role in ecommerce technology, you'll want to include a cover letter with your application. In fact, that's the case with nearly any job application, in every field and industry.

Writing cover letters can be challenging: You'll have to think about the proper format and what information to include. And many people find writing about themselves difficult, particularly in a cover letter, where you want to shine a light on your accomplishments and experience, without seeming boastful.

But while the task of writing a cover letter may not be easy, it's worth spending time on. For one thing, recruiters and hiring managers will expect you to include this document in your application.

Your cover letter presents a really good opportunity for you to make the case for your candidacy, and show hiring managers why you're a strong applicant for the role at hand.

Find out more about what information to prioritize in your cover letter. Plus, see an example of a strong cover letter, which you can use as inspiration while crafting your own.

What to Include in an Ecommerce Technology Cover Letter

Not sure what to write about your cover letter? Consider these elements:

Skills and experience: Your cover letter should include details on the skills you possess, as well as relevant experience. Use your knowledge of the industry to determine which skills to call out. Read through the job advertisement closely too, and use that to steer which skills you mention. This may lead to you mentioning your knowledge of SEO, a certification you have in AI or machine learning, and so on.

Accomplishments: You don't just want to list off your experience and daily responsibilities in the cover letter, since that's not necessarily compelling. Instead, use the space to call out accomplishments. Have you been able to increase sales in your current role at an ecommerce company? Did you lead a team that developed a new shopping cart that increased sales? Call out your big accomplishments. Whenever possible, make sure to quantify them. For instance, you might say:

At ABC Company, I led the 12-person team that developed a one-click shopping cart, which helped increase our mobile conversion by 37%.

Keywords: As well as people reading your cover letter, in some cases, software may scan the text. That's why it's helpful to include relevant keywords, since both the people and software applications will notice them.

How to Use a Cover Letter Example

A cover letter example helps you with the layout of your letter. Examples show you what elements you need to include in your letters, such as introductions and body paragraphs.

Along with helping with your layout, cover letter examples can help you see what kind of content you should include in your document.

They can also give you ideas on the type of language you want to use. For example, a sample resume might show you the kind of action words you should include in your own cover letter.

While examples are a great starting point to your letter, you should always be flexible. You should tailor a cover letter example to fit your own work history and the job for which you are applying.

Dear Ms. Lee,

I would like to accept my strong interest in the position of Associate Vice President, Ecommerce Technology.

I am currently employed at ABCD Company as the Development Manager of Website Enterprises, a position with scope and responsibilities very similar to the position you have advertised. In my tenure at ABCD, I have worked to implement a number of strategic ecommerce initiatives successfully.

One of my primary responsibilities is the development and management of corporate strategic ecommerce technology. This key experience will benefit your organization in three critical ways:

  • I have experience developing long-range operating plans in support of varied strategic and tactical business objectives.
  • I have achieved success implementing online processes for performance and growth, resulting in a 19% rise in online sales within one fiscal year.
  • I have a demonstrated ability to work collegially with executive leaders across business units and lines of business.

Of equal importance to the position you've advertised, I have focused on developing best practices and core competencies for company ecommerce initiatives. These range from creating and modifying search-related landing pages to linking customer needs to the ecommerce experience. All of these best practices have successfully improved online experiences.

These are just a few examples of my accomplishments at ABCD. I hope that you will find that this brief view, in combination with the attached resume and my recommendations, describes an ecommerce professional with the experience and skills to meet or exceed the requirements of the position of Associate Vice President, Ecommerce Technology.

Sincerely,

Signature (hard copy letter)
