Museum Careers

By , About.com Guide

Are you interested in curating an art exhibit, teaching a workshop at a Children's Museum, becoming a conservator of fine art, or just looking to establish a museum career?

Museum Internships

An internship or volunteer experience is highly recommended (and a great way to find out if this career field is for you). Major museums like the Smithsonian and the Metropolitan Museum of Art have formal internship programs. While many smaller museums may have informal programs, most will welcome volunteers - and it certainly looks great on your resume.

Graduate Degrees / Certification

For many professional positions you will need a graduate degree or certificate in museum studies or in the specific field you are interested in. Search for graduate schools by program to see a list of all the colleges and universities who offer museum studies programs.

The American Association of Museums is a good site to bookmark to stay on top of what's happening in the museum field. The Museum Employment Resource Center has job listings and offers a great place to post your resume where it will seen by many interested museum HR directors.
