What to Do When Unemployment Runs Out

By December 12, 2013

Follow me on:

What can you do if your unemployment runs out or you're about to run out of unemployment benefits? First of all, check with your State Unemployment Office to make sure that you are receiving all the extended benefits you qualify for, and for updates on extended benefits in your location.

If you're out or close to being out, take a look at the other resources that are available for unemployed workers and take advantage of whatever you can to help you get by until you find a new job.

Here's information on where to get help when your unemployment checks run out, including federal and state government assistance, local organizations which may be able to help, and where to find job search assistance.

I hate to say this because I am reacting out of frustration, and sometimes it comes back to bite me…but right now I could care less. When submitting for unemployment benefits, do not tell them you could be called back. Here’s my reason…

Due to losing my job a few years ago, I have been a substitute teacher for about two years. This year I attempted to file for unemployment just to make ends meet until this fall when classes resume and I am hopefully called again. Wouldn’t you know it, I was turned down because I revealed that I think they might call me back as soon as school starts. What a crock of BS. I was not guaranteed days or hours, but because I said i might get called they refused me. I really needed to have something (no matter how small)to help my family through these rough times. There are many who reap the benefits of free everything, but not me and my family. We’ve been paying into the tax coffers for over 40 years now, but we won’t see a dime of it…I am completely disenchanted by our country’s policies and open wallet to those who never contributed.

I agree with you 100 %. This country is designed for lazy low lives. If you get knocked up at an early age or your family has been on social services for generations, you are have the luxury for the most part of having a free college education, food stamps and several other government programs that will give you a free ride. My prayers go out to you and your family. Welcome to middle class poverty !!!

Have you watched the news lately? This is a recession! Speaking of the government, when that shuts down, then there will be no assistance. You need to watch what you say. Everyone is not a “low life” because they are considered “low income” everyone that is “low income” is not lazy. An indivividual could atted college, lose there job and be welcomed into the world of poverty. Then they will need government assistance. Who in their right mind wants to be disabled and have to depend on anyone that is in their business- (the government). You are sadly mistaken and uneducated. You need to allow your prayers to go out for yourself because you do not know what tomorrow may bring for yourself. thank you

(4) taylor says:

well, maybe you should have a baby, so that you will have the luxury of the government being your caretaker. Why dont you allow that to work for you instead of going against it. I AM A COLLEGE GRADUATE AND CANNOT FIND WORK!!!!!!!! So, if I can receive help from any source, I will not be so proud to accept it. It is no such thing as “middleclass”. There is only rich vs poor. You need to be upset at ex-president George Bush for making this economy this way. So, get ready for your food stamp approval and while you are at it apply for a medical card and maybe you can get section-8 as well. You’re probably secretly getting assistance anyways and I’m paying for it everytime i am taxed.

Full time students are not eligible for food stamps except for very specific conditions. If a full time student gets caught having food stamps when they do not meet those conditions, they will be forced to pay them back. I always thought that was a crock because if anyone needs help, it’s a student, not someone who is sitting on his/her couch doing nothing.

You are so right. I’m Asian-American and I live throughout California and I know exactly what your talking about. It’s not just Asians but hispanics and blacks are doing this too. Don’t get wrong some family actually do use the government program to get by until they or their child finish college and get a good job but there are time where people abuse it.

I agree w/ Jeff! I’ve been unemployed since March 2009. My last position was an audit mgr. Well, one of my hobbies is dancing. So I decided to start my own dance business to make some money on the side. So when I reported one week that I made $20 for teaching a class, they did this whole report on me asking questions about my business, yada yada yada. We’ll they took away my unemployment b/c “technically” I was no longer considered “unemployed” since I could POTENTIALLY gain financially by being self employed. So as I was trying to make ends meet at $385 a week, and making $20 ONE TIME….. I now am not getting anything.

I guess welfare is next?????? : (

@Jeff and Lynnda,

I understand where you are coming from as I prefer to work than collect benefits but these are hard times and survival is more important than honesty. Collect until your business has steady income or take a part time minimum wage job and expand your business. The work force developement depart has no way to track your self employed income since you are not paying into the “system”. Remember, take care of your own and don’t trust the government or big business.

I agree wholeheartedly with all of you. I have been an Administrative Assistant for over 10 years, mostly temping. I became full time at a school I used to temp for in September of 2008 and was happy there until budget cuts and restructuring of the staff saw me lose my job in July of 2009. At first I was denied my benefits by a boss who had it in for me, but I fought all summer and was eventually awarded back checks in September. Then, my fiance and I split, and I was left to take care of all of the bills by myself, including the home that I own.

I know of people who have been getting payments passed the full 99 weeks worth of Tiers and are STILL getting paid, despite the end of the extension, and these people haven’t even tried to find work. I on the other hand am trying to find work and help support the rest of my family. I agree, Jeff, hearing “you are overqualified” sucks, but even worse when you don’t even have a degree, just years of hard work and experience…

My unemployment has run out, when I contacted my local benefit office and ask what should I do and how can I get money to pay my rent and put food on the table, is there anything they can suggest to help me? Let me get this right! When the unemployed exhaust their 99 weeks of unemployment benefits (as of July 2 2010), they will receive the additional 26 weeks recently approved by congress. This is a total of 125 weeks of benefits. Correct? When my 99 weeks run out, does this apply to me?

(20) Donna says:

I have just applied for unemployment – 09-2011. I am told that I am eligible for 26 – 40 weeks, nothing more. If they pass another 99 week law – great. Otherwise, that 99 week option is no longer availalble. Also, they used to help with the COBRA payment. I have been notified my COBRA will be 1900 per month. I can’t afford that. I take 22 pills a day. I went to WALMART to try to get a medicine I know I can’t LIVE without – it is 197.05. I can’t afford that. I don’t know how long I can go without my medication before I die.

(21) Bryan says:

Find out who makes your medicine. I take a medication that is $120.00 a month generic, I found out that Pfizer makes my meds and they have an assistance program. I filled out all the paperwork and had to get my doctor to fill out some too. In about 30 days I was approved. They send me a 90 day supply to my doctor now, it is free and they will do this for 1 year, then re-evaluate your status. And maybe ask your doctor sometimes know of assistance programs.

I’m so confused…I have been receiving benefits since Jan after I lost my job of 17 years due to bankruptcy… my benefits have ended.. no extensions… while others are receiving extended benefits for almost 2 years?? how long did they work?? Benefits should be paid to you based on what you paid in.. then.. when they are gone.. they are mine to be gone.. this is nuts!! There are no jobs out there that pay enough to cover daycare for my kids..I made 60K and am applying for $10/hr jobs and still cant get an interview! I guess I will flip burgers when my kids go back to school if I can find any of those hiring.

I agree with Jeff – I was laid off from my job – I qualitified for unem bnfts – was getting paid – but also subbing whenever they called me – I still had benefits left and they told me I had to file a new claim against the school – so I did and I was denied – because “I may get called” what is that – there is not guarantee – it’s BS – the topper is – I had benefits left from my previous claim and they will not get back to me about it -
I work as much as I aam called, I send out resumes – maybe I should just on my ass and collect welfare….food stamps…..heating…free rent…..a cell phone….and get a $4000 check every year because I have a kid – maybe I should have a few kids – that’ll make me more money – I am fed up!!!!

August 22, 2010 at 12:36 pm
(24) Skippie says:

If the traditional district that you sub for has summer school and does not offer you work then you are eligible in California for UI benefits during those weeks. However, EDD usually fails to divide the summer into periods of recess (when there is absolutely no classes being taught) and non-recess (when there are summer school classes being held) and holds traditional year substitute teachers ineligible (under UE Code section 1253.3) for the entire summer which is wrong according to both the California Superior Courts and the Unemployment Appeals Board.

Here’s my story. I was recently denied benefits because of the reasonable assurance BS too but I researched the law here in Cali and found that the California Unemployment Appeals Board, found on appeal in 2004, that a group of ten substitute teachers from the San Francisco USD were eligible for UI benefits during summer school which ran from June 19, 2003-July 25, 2003. If the district failed to work them too bad so sad. It’s not the subs fault they were not called into work.

Of course the SFUSD filed a writ to stop EDD from paying them UI benefits with the San Francisco Superior Courts in Jan. 2005. In Oct. of 2005 the Superior Court Judge, the Honorable James L. Warren, refused the district’s writ saying that substitute teachers are entitled, as the UI Appeals Board found, to collect during summer school if they were willing to work and made less than their weekly benefit UE Code 1253.3 notwithstanding.

Here is why. The judge essentially said that subs (unlike contracted full-time teachers) don’t get paid unless they work so UI benefits during summer school is not in their case “double-dipping.” He explained that California UI benefits for school employees is based on FUTA (Federal Unemployment Tax Act) which was written to “ameliorate the suffering from unemployment” and also to prevent full time teachers from “double-dipping” during summer vacation because they get paid for the entire year even though they only work ten months.

Subs on the other hand, he went on to explain, don’t have a contract and don’t get paid unless the are “physically” in a classroom. Subs, therefore, should not be lumped in with non working regular contracted teachers who didn’t get to work summer school. We are a different animal all together.

I haven’t gotten a hearing date yet (and don’t expect to get one for another couple of month according to EDD) but will keep everyone posted.

Here are the cases I am referring to:

A.CAUIAB Case AO-89924; Johanna Von Gottfried; Oct. 2003
B. Superior Court of California County of San Francisco Case CPF-05-504939 which can be downloaded for free here:

What to do in the meantime is the problem when you have bills to pay. You have to do your homework but there are program that will even help you pay your mortgage (for one month only) and also put gas in your car, pay your utilities and even give you gift cards for clothing, etc. Check out your counties Community Action Partnership program (google it) to see what you can qualify for. It has to be an emergency situation (like being denied ui benefits through no fault of your own) which occurred in the past thirty days and you have to be able to show that you can resume payment of your living expenses after they help you get through the month. I am in the process of doing that right now. There are a lot of hoops to jump through but they are reasonable. They gave me a $40 gas card to help me pay for gas for the first couple of weeks of school (we start back up tomorrow-Aug. 23rd) and are going to pay most of my mortgage for August. Some counties pay more than others.

Lastly, the federal government recently passes legislation to help unemployed and underemployed low income workers with mortgage payments since its Hope for Homeowners Program was such a bust.. It’s called “Hardest Hit.” California’s program will be rolled out November 1st as is being administered by CALHFA. Here is that link: http://keepyourhome.calhfa.ca.gov/programs/uma.pdf

Hope this helps.

(27) Joe Witmer says:

Well, my unemployment has run out….October 20th to be exact. I have been to hell and haven’t been back. I to, am a 47 year old single man with no wife, no kids and a workmen comp law suit that I won…..11 years ago. Let me explain:

I used to deliver produce to restaurants & schools in the Mpls/St Paul area. One day while making a delivery, I fell down the narrow cellar steps, injuring my back. I hired an attorney, won my case, received enough money to retrain myself and received life time medical benefits on my back. Went to college, had a 4.0 GPA, was in the top 3% of my class, earned a degree in Auto CAD and immediately went to work. For the next 10 years, I work for the same company, earn many company awards and become department head. February 2009 my world comes crashing down when the company laid me off due to the recession. I go on unemployment and start applying for every job under the sun. I have my truck repo’d, lose my apartment and my health insurance. I move into my friends house in WI and continue to look for work. I’m now applying for jobs at the local Subway, Mc Donalds, Arby’s, Taco John’s and still no luck. Part of the problem is the job application…..you know that spot that says “do you have any job restrictions” well in order to keep my life time medical on my back, I must live within the rules that workman’s comp set forth in my law suit. I can’t lift more than 40 lbs, no constant bend, twisting, sitting or standing. I must be able to get up & move and I must be able to sit down. If I re injure my back and they “investigate” my history and find out I don’t work within my restrictions……no life time medical! I called disability and no go on that because I am only 10% disabled and am able to work……that is if someone would hire me. I guess at this point…..I have no family, no belongings but the clothes on my back, no job, no money……..suicide is the only answer in my book………Thanks Obama!

(30) Jeanette says:

By telling them these things on the application, you are closing the door. At that question “do you have any job restrictions?” You write, to be discussed in interview. Then you tell them, in interview your back was only 10% injured. And who doesn’t have bad backs these days.

If they ask you can say, disability told you when you called them that you can work. They won’t call. If they like the impression you give them, smile, and be upbeat, they will hire you.
Good luck! Stop being so honest on application until you get the interview and keep it short. Don’t volunteer information.

I have done it, and it worked. Tell them there is nothing wrong with your hands, arms or mind. You are a good worker, and can be counted on to be on time.

You do not have to go in to details as to why you have medical insurance just for your back unless they ask.

It is in the law of HIPPA that no one is to know what your medical records say! Unless you sign a paper for them to give your info out. You can say disability told you, you are only 10% disabled and that you can work.
Get your foot in the door.

Good Luck, and don’t volunteer info.
Sorry for your troubles.

Mark – Why does President Obama have to take everything on his shoulders? What about the GOP? Are you really that obtuse? Republican politicians want to eliminate taxes for billionaires who inherit their money and collect dividend checks from offshore corporations (and during a state of war, which we are still in, uh, thank you, Bush). These corporations are run by CEOs who shipped the jobs of the American middle class to China and India, putting millions in their own country out of work so that they could hire workers for three bucks an hour. How is that Obama’s fault? Maybe the corporate welfare recipients need to get off THEIR collective asses and do a little work like I do as a math teacher. Get mad, I applaud it! But get mad at the right people, not just at those who Limbaugh criticizes on his little show. Giving enormous tax breaks to obscenely rich people in a state of emergency is something Bush did. Obama tried to stop their tax break extensions, was defeated, and you think that’s great. But he tries to help people without trust funds and you slap him down. The tea-party and their ilk have you SNOWED, Mark. Bush did start a trillion dollar war on the wrong country. Don’t you read or think for yourself? This is American politics 101. Quit using God to pick on poor Taylor and reevaluate your own thinking process.

You have the president sending money over to other countries helping them but lets screw our own when we need help. I was going to school to try to improve my life and my financial aid got cut out also so what is a person to do to make a life for your children. If Obama had a clue himself he would cut off ALL foreign aid and put that aid to work for the people of this country. But NO he still sends our money overseas by the Billions. He could give a crap about the American people. An idiot could fix our problems in 1 day and our so called President hasn’t done a thing but make it worse. Wake up…..that is his plan. Destroy America then he can become King of the world. He is moving us toward Global Governance and if you think that is not true let me know what you think in a few years when America no longer exists. The last thing you will be worrying about in the future is a job. Worrying about what happened to America and our freedom will take worrying about a job to a new level. Wake up people its in the plan and his plan is working.

November 4, 2011 at 12:54 pm
(36) Rika says:

Karen, do you have any idea how tiny the foreign aid budget is? Probably not. I can see from your diatribe on Mr. Obama that you more than likely don’t even know that it was the Bush Administration’s pro-corporation policies that enabled so many CEOs to send millions of jobs overseas to avoid higher wages and benefits for Americans. They were willing to send all those jobs there, even if it did spell disaster for the US workforce. Which it did. You tea party people don’t even bother to find out the truth about things before you start accusing people of taking over the world. Its people like you who don’t think for yourselves and let yourselves be manipulated by a party, namely the GOP, who doesn’t give a damn about you except during election time. You’re the one who needs to wake up and you don’t even realize it. Ugh frustrating.

I agree with everyone here. I am soooo frustrated at the unemployment system! I have been a designer for over 10 years, recently our engineering office closed do to no work. Thankfully I received a stipend to get me by and return to school. I jumped at the chance to pursue something else outside of my career. When I notified the unemployment office, my payments were suspended for an investigation of my current student status. I had several meetings to see what was the hold up. Finally someone pulled me aside and advised me to stop reporting I was attending school. I continued to file weekly claims minus reporting my student status but no funds were deposited. Frustrated, I called my state governor to see if something could be done on from their end. I received a call later that day from the local umemployment office to inform me that my unemployment benefits were reactivated and I would be receiving back payments. Hope someone can use my experience and apply it to their nightmare with unemployment. Good luck all!

He hadn’t enacted any policies or signed any bills at that point, so please get off of the “blame Obama” bandwagon. Got a shock a few weeks back. I was unemployed for about eight months, I took a lay off so another guy under could stay, during which time my landlord offered me reduced rent in exchange for minor work around the complex. Any how, someone reported me and I’m scheduled for a hearing. They considered it fraud because I didn’t report the amount of rent exchanged as income. Maybe I’m guilty, but I find strange I drive a fairly decent vehicle, have a decent place to live, etc. and the guy across the road collects “assistance” and drives an Escalade around town all day, and gets his bills paid by the same people coming after me.

Did you see the accepted paperwork or are you saying what you think?

My unemployment benefits are about to expire next week. I’ve been unemployed for about 20 months now, laid off in 2009 for reasons that I’ve come to discover was a lie. I’ve been looking for work ever since. I’m going to keep looking and can only pray I find something soon so I can help my husband keep our heads above water and food on the table because his income alone isn’t enough. I’ve been working since the age of 18, I’m nearly 32 years old now and I’ve never been unemployed for this long, ever. I never wanted to collect UI, I’ve always prided myself on working for a living. Now I’d rather be working at Target or somewhere, anywhere for minimum wage but when I applied I got turned down for having no credit! On top of everything else I just found out some time ago that I’m pregnant. Right now we need a baby like a hole in the head. Please pray for me, I need all the help I can get, I need to find work, any job will do!

My story is a little differant, I am a 56 y/o single man who worked for the same company for 34 years, was clearing 650.00-700.00 per week (average for NJ) for the last 5 of those 34 years I litterally struggled to go to work each day because of COPD and severe stress, so when the company was down-sizing in 10/10, because of my seniority, I was offered a transfer or lay-off, naturally I jumped at the lay-off because by this time, I was struggeling just to make it through the 8 hours, hoping I would find something less-physical or try to get disablity, (I previously researched something called “disablity while unemployed” Needless to say I can not find any work, let alone less-physical work, and I havent started the disablity option yet, and don’t know if I’ll even try because although my pulmanary function test was very poor, my chest x-ray was ok, I am seeing a counceller about my mental issues, but mental strees is hard to prove, (I know how I feel, and I know my physical limitations) don’t think thats good enough for disablity. financially, I can’t complain, I’m getting 975.00 every 2 weeks from unemployment, and not near the 99 week cut-off, (don’t really know if the 99 weeks is even true in NJ), I just hear it. But it is going to end, and then what? if there is someone else out there in a similar situation, please shed some light! BTW, I am also very well controlled HIV+ whick would not be considered a factor, (I am straight, lol)

Hurry up and apply for Social Security Disability. Your medical records are all you need and, you do qualify for SSI with your age. Do not wait. Get all your paper work together. Birth certificate, letters from any doctors or therapist you see and bring it with you to the Social Security office. They will help you. You will definitely get a nice amount since you worked for 34 years! You paid into ssi all those years, it’s your money.

Take the matter into your own hands, just call and make an appointment. Make the phone call ASAP. What are you waiting for?
God Speed!

Thanks for the support, Jeanette, If you read down, you’ll see that I did apply through a law firm, all my tests came back bad from the disability doctors, so it looks like I’ll get it! The only thing I’m worrying about is what to say to unemployment if and when they ask me why I was telling them I was willing and able to work, meanwhile, I had a disability claim in progress, any suggestions or do you think my worries are for nothing? Also, at age 56, I am eligable for ssd benifits in NJ, if qualified, but not ssi till I’m 62 or 65, that’s what I though, anyway. And thanks so much again for your support, Ben

I don’t know what to do my employer fired me when i was pregnant and i was only able to collect unemployment for 15 weeks but i’m almost 9 months pregnant now and benefits have ran out what do i do?

July 6, 2011 at 8:05 pm
(51) Ben says:

Hi Whitaker, what state are you from, here in NJ, the cut-off is 99 weeks, when your state benifits run out, it’s picked up at the federal level up to 99 weeks minus, of course the amount you recieved by your state, check and see if the same is true in your state. ps: I’m not close to the 99 week limit yet as stated in my post, but I applied for disability and have no idea what to do/say to unemployment when they ask if your able and willing to work (if I was able, I wouldn’t be applying for disability) but no one has answered my question as of yet, anyway, I hope this will be some help/hope for you, Ben

October 15, 2011 at 2:16 pm
(52) jeanette says:

Whitaker, you have to go on welfare until you find work, get a letter saying someone will help you with extra rent, even if they don’t and, you get a job off the books maybe. Do not tell anyone what you are planning except your family members you are close with. People love to rat each other out. You need to survive.
Take the letters, birth certificates to welfare and apply. Get all the benefits.
If someone can say will help you, maybe they can, I don’t know. They can even say they are renting you and the baby a room. They will come to the house once. In NY.
It seems the govt. is pushing everyone to either go on welfare or, disability. So, we have to out play them at their own game, and not be their victim.

There are jobs out there if you want to work you can find it!! i was unemployed for 6 months and did’t try to find a job and i could have got one. I desided to start my own company and now am finding it hard to hire someone because stupid laws make it hard!!! Kick all the illegal MEXICANS out and there will be plenty of jobs to go around if you want to work. problem is the lazy don’t want to work, they just want a free ride. tha’ts why we as a nation are loosing everything.

July 19, 2011 at 5:02 pm
(54) Ben says:

Joshua, illegal Mexicans? Mexicans period, even the “legal” ones work for a fraction of what we are used to working for, but it works for them because they have 3/4 families living in the same apartment/house, and what they don’t spend goes to Mexico! (hard-working and clean, I must admit they are, but a drain on the American jobs and economy, they are also) Let’s not forget the Indians, most come here with some money and open businesses and hire only their kind, and the kicker is, the money they make off the Americans goes back to India to get more of them here to do the same thing, not to mention the American jobs that are “out-sorced” to these two countries. So what else do you expect to happen to the American work-force when all these jobs, and all this money are going to other countries to make THEM prosper.

You are an ignorant chump. I was laid off of my job in Aug of 2009. While collecting unemployment benefits, I was actively searching for work, fully expecting to take at least a 20-30k paycut. Till the point my benefits ran out b/c the unemployment numbers reached a percentage that eliminated 7 weeks of extended benefits. So I went from 60k+ a year in august 2009 to $405 a week.. to NOTHING. After losing my job, I spent every dime I had saved and maxed out my credit cards, just to pay the bills that I didn’t have an issue doing prior to losing my job. I took a job making very little money…when my benefits abruptly stopped. Just to get a letter after I took the job that if I was still unemployed I would be eligible for 7 more weeks due to the % rate go back up. So just because you were lazy, doesn’t make everyone lazy. I’m working a very physical job and making peanuts just so I don’t starve or lose my car. Thank God I am fortunate enough to be able to stay with my family during my time of need or else I would be homeless. NOT BECAUSE OF LAZINESS but because of the lack of jobs out there. Also, just for the record, I am college educated and have multiple years of experience in my field. Unfortunately, many jobs require you submit to a credit check in order to be considered for the positions being offered and when you are competing with 300-500 other applicants and having credit card debt due to the layoff to begin with. The jobs are far and few between. So before you talk about being lazy…Get your facts straight. Ignorance is not bliss. Grow up.

(57) Ben says:

Jason Spencer, I don’t know if your comment was refering to my posts, but if it was, thanks!!! if not….anyway, I have a few updates and items that may help someone here out. I finally hired a firm to handle my disability case, and since they want no money up-front, and all the work it involves, they only take cases that have a 98% chance of being approved, (and believe me, they been with me every step of the way, beyond my expectations) They informed me that just the stress combined with boredom from being out of work for long periods of time is pushing many people over the end, therefore getting more clients who have just “lost it” because of the employment situation. And if you have serious physical problems also, that makes the claim stronger and should consider this route. the fee is 25% of your retro payment, capped at 6000.00. If anyone here is interested, they are “Allsup” , you can find them on the internet. (They also explained that this is not the “lazy persons” way out, it’s for people who have very serious issues to deal with, physical and/or mental) As for myself, I was not capable of doing any very physical work even when I was working, as I stated in my first post, I had to force myself to work for the final two years because of my COPD, and at the end of 8 hours, I was useless for the rest of the day, that’s why I took the lay-off rather than a transfer. (many people tell me I was “crazy” for doing that, believe me, I would have rather kept working, but had no choice) eventually, I would have probably been fired anyway for poor performance. I have read every post here, and many of the people have serious issues and should consider this before the stress and depression of being out of work, and knowing nothing is out there anyway, kills you. It’s been a pleasure sharing with all of you, and hope this may be of some help to some of you, and lastly, wishing you all the best.

I read these posts and feel so bad for everyone. There should be a website created for people in your shoes who just need a little support to weather this mess of an economy. People should be able to donate food, money, clothing, gift cards for gas, etc. Of course, a job is ultimately the answer, but in the mean time, while companies are not hiring, people’s stories need to get out. People want to help. Remember those sad stories printed around the holiday for donations by newspapers? Maybe they could do that every week in every paper or somewhere on line? Most of us doing allright now, give to charities all the time; but we have no idea how to give to fellow Americans in this situation. Maybe someone could find a way to get these in the papers. Everyone falls on hard luck; I was there once on my last nickel and skinny as a rail. Felt like I had to beg to get assistance just to stay alive and it was horrible. I am in a much better place years later just be sheer luck. Just don’t ever give up; this too shall pass. And don’t vote for any of these tea folk, they don’t care about you and it ticks me off. My prayers go out to all of you and I’ll be looking in the news for a place to give that could help.

I know better than to report wages now.

I own & operate a busy HVAC Business. 11-14 million people
out of work no one is beating down my door for a job. Unemployment was designed to assist people between jobs,
but unfortunately it has become a retirement just like disability
for many. There are jobs out there and true some don’t pay the best but thats when you work 2 jobs if necessary or longer hours until you find something better. This country cannot sustain itself with a trend of a few working hard for the many.

(62) Ben says:

Thank you, “sickandtired”, Does that guy Mike think people really like to be umemployed and/or on disability? (granted, there are some people who try to take advantage of the “system”) , but I know some people who really can’t work and deserve disability, and are denied, (lucky for me, I have a very good law firm working on mine) Does he think I wanted to take a lay-off rather than a transfer from a 26.00 per hour full-time job with full benifits? I would have to be crazy, (yes this was my “way-out” of a good job that I could not physically do anymore) it was that or drop dead or get fired for underperformance, (try unloading trucks with COPD, Mike, it’s not very pleasant) And as you stated, “Sickandtired”, it’s not like jobs are out there for the picking anymore, I would have settled for a few 8-9 dollar per hour jobs which didn’t require extremely physically activity, I couldn’t even get a position as sales clerk at Rite-Aid!, part time! JOBS ARE JUST NOT OUT THERE! and at 56 years old, and not the best of health, I don’t think I could go back to school to learn all the technical knowledge you need to get a chance to land a job in today’s market, and to make things worse, more “blue-collar” jobs are closing every day! So, Mike, some (most) people are not using unemployment or disability as a retirement.

(63) Michelle says:

Mike….I’m on the fence on your comment. My 68 year old father has never been on unemployment with 40 years in the Sheet Metal Workers Union, all those years in the HVAC industry. He has been a foreman, journeyman, etc. With his natural abilities, experience and work ethic he has made a name for himself in Southern California to the point that he has job offers every week! lol I don’t understand these comments about “age discrimination” when he is working twice as hard as the twenty something at 68.

On the other hand, I am a 36 year old professional, Teacher and Graduate Student who has been unemployed for over a year. I am being told that I am overqualified everywhere I go. I am not complaining. The Lord will provide in his perfect timing, but judging from the bitterness, rudeness and even, dare I say, racist comments from this posting, I can see why some here are still unemployed. A hiring manager could smell that kind of rancid sentiment a mile away. I’m not a big fan of Dave Ramsey (appreciate his debt snowball concept, if at all) but one of his admonishments was to take this economic situation and consider what we would truly like to do with our lives. Use the time to find a vocation and “calling”. That’s exactly what I’m going to do: whether unemployment falls through or not.

Any good church will have a deacon’s fund to help out folks during hard times. I would encourage everyone to give. Yes, I know we’re all on unemployment, but giving is an act of will that we have at our disposals. God gives grace to the humble. Consider it.

So, before you blast my posting. Consider that I have more “debt” and more living expenses than you living on the coast of California, even though I am living “rent-free” with friends, unemployment barely paid for utilities, food and other necessities.

Please do not believe you can rely on Welfare. Depending upon the State in which you live, you could be offered a mere $300 PER MONTH. Applying for assistance is a humiliating nightmare. I know because I have tried. I saw at first glance who is getting help. I was surrounded by unwashed, illiterate, immigrant smokers who stroll in wearing their pajamas! How do they afford to smoke cigarettes? I am not eligible for anything simply because I own a 5 year old vehicle. That’s the only asset I have and I need it for when I finally land new employment. AND I have (2) college degrees with student loans that I cannot pay. Be very careful if you own a home, several vehicles, and have any type of savings and retitement fund. Your local agency will tell you to sell everything and live off of the earnings. I am embarrased by this richest nation in the world.

I’ve been there done that. Had a good paying job at a public school. Full benefits and everything. Lost my job in June of 2009. The local superintendant decided to build a new football stadium. How to pay for it? The taxpayers voted it down 3 times…he built it anyway!!!! He now had a rainy day budget surplus of about half of the cost of the stadium. Where you say did he get the other half? Hmmmm…only the best of accountants could figure this one. My position was eliminated because of declining student enrollment. Why would we need a new stadium? The old one was condemned by a friendly State inspector. anyway, I have applied to 100s of jobs with only a handful of interviews. It has been 28 months since I was laid off, with all of 99 weeks unemployment exhausted, and now food stamps cut off, because I reported that I was not receiving unemployment any more…I am living on empty.

Hey Mike, sure looks like you got the short end of the stick, and the real bummer is that there is nothing out there! anyway, thanks for confirming that there is 99 weeks of unemployment benefits, I heard it from many people, but didn’t really believe it. I’ve been collecting almost one year now, but I was lucky, I currently have a disability claim in progress, (I have alot of health/mental issues going against me) thats why as I stated in previous comments, I excepted the lay-off from my long-time job last year, I have already recieved negative reports from all the doctors disability sent me to, confirming my many health issues, so I quess it’s just a matter of a few months till I get long-term disability, (according to the firm handling my claim)
It’s no fun having disabilities that prevent me from doing physical work, but I quess, In my case, it worked out in my favor. I just really feel bad for all the people out there who are capapable of working, but cannot find anything and have nothing else to fall back on once the unemployment benifits run out, good luck to all and God bless-Ben

Hi Earl, ya, you sure got a bad break! Thank God your employer did that for you. I don’t understand why you were denied disability, especially if you were seeking “short-term”, (or temporary disability) you were injured! But…If you were seeking “long-term”/permanent disability, (you didn’t say) I could understand why, you have to be very seriously ill or injured with no/slim chance of returning to work, from what you wrote, you were not permenatly injured, and my guess is that your quite young since you have a 2 y/o daughter, your age is also a very important factor when applying for “long-term”. So that would be out of the question for you, but again, if you were seeking “short-term”, I can’t understand why you were denied. (believe me, if you read all of my comments, you can see that I been through it all, and did plenty research also, so I know) I’m in my final stages of getting “long-term” disability, but thats because I have some serious health issues, (all confirmed by the doctors disability sent me to) Anyway, good luck, and look into the “short-term” again, if you paid into it, you should get it, (till you recover, anyway) Ben

Hi Earl, you did not mention if you were applying for “short” or “long” term disability, forget about being approved for “long-term”, you have to be injured so bad that there is a slim or no chance of returning to work, but if it was “short-term”, if you paid into it, I can’t understand why you were denied, just untill you recover and become able to return to work. Good Luck, and try again! can’t hurt. Ben

Anyways my unemployment benefits ran out in Sept of this year and I said but I did not collect all the unemployment from my last job before this one, I called back 3 times and after the first time I was told I was owed 13 weeks the second time I was told I was owed 20 weeks the third time I was told I was owed nothing I’ve exhausted my unemployment and there is nothing I can do about it. Not I have a 8 year old son I’m a single mom and as much as I send out my resume I am not getting any calls for a interview nothing. If it was not for my mom I have no idea what I would be doing. Now its been over two years since I had full time work and even part time gigs are few and far between. If we error we pay for it with long processes and appeals and faxes and hearings….But what if unemployment compensation errors or the government errors?? Do they compensate as we do? I,dont think so; they do not take responsibility for there mistakes when it counts the most. It’s not right and I attend to fight back. I have lived life by the rules and because the economy is in a state if deficiency (not due to my contribution), I’m the many that’s expendable. Absolutely ridiculous!!!!! The section 8 program has been stopped here since 2009 so I’m honestly facing homelessness in the next weeks to come. Life should not be like this! I’ve been working since the age of 16 and I’ve been giving the systems a$$ to kiss! I can’t even land a job working in retail as an associate! There is no way in hell I can be patriotic when the contributing citizens of this country are being treated this way. I paid my taxes and this is the thanks that’s given?

Hi, I’m a 30 yr old male who has worked since I was 15..first a Subway then worked my up to becoming a loan officer for a bank..over a year ago I lost my job and my unemployment benefits will soon run out. I’m completely distraught right now and not sure what my next step should be. I’ve gone on several job interviews, just returning from one now actually – also at a bank and I can’t seem to get hired anywhere. Either I’m “overqualified”, or got beat out by other candidates..its always one thing or another and it seems to be consistant let downs since my got laid off from my old job and have been looking for new work. I’ve never felt more despressed or confused and have recently began contemplating suicide as I don’t see how I’ll be able to sustain myself once my unemployment runs out..what does someone in my situation do? I can’t even get a job at the mall as a simple sales clerk. I’m 30, a male and single I’ve paid into the system all my life and now its failing me miserably in my time of need. Once my benefits expire I won’t be able to buy food or pay my rent..the only logical thing I can think to do is wither up and die..is there even any other option..*sigh*..not even sure why I’m writing this, I’m just so hopeless and afraid that the only option I have is a permanent one…

On Februar.y 2, I viewed online my remaining benefits of unemployment and to my surprise there was a note attached stating I am being investigated for earning possible wages, I have not received any kind of money from my former employer in fact I have a law suit against them and I think that the stall on my unemployment benefits is linked to the fact I declined to accept a very small settlement for my wrongful termination. I am told now until unemployment is done with its investigation I will have NO! income all because of a LIE to further hurt me. What can I do? I have already contacted my bank and it shows that I have received no additional monies only my unemployment checks. Is there any thing I can do?

Did you get advised whether there would be a hearing? If so, you should be able to attend and show your bank statements, etc. You should also be able to appeal if your claim is denied.

If you can talk to unemployment on the phone (early morning or late afternoon is the best time to get through) I’d ask if you can provide them with your bank statements or do anything else to expedite the investigation.

Hi All, Unfortunately I have been on CA State disability for a year now (due to no medical insurance, medical help has been limited) and today I received a letter stating that I have exhausted all of my disability benefits. I have no idea what to do now. Applying for Federal will take too long and I’ll be homeless before that happens. I have some pretty major emotional issues right now, not to mention several herniated discs that make the pickins slim for work…and even if I was able to work, would I still qualify for unemployment after a year of being on disability?…there is still the finding a suitable job for my disability. So my question is (because I’m about to really go off the deep end since they just cut you off without warning) what if anything can I do? I will be homeless if I cannot pay my rent, and will not be able to afford my very necessary prescriptions and medical visits. I’m really scared right now. (And for those of you commenting on people making unemployment and disability a retirement plan…please don’t judge unless you know the situation!!!) I went from making $55,000+my 3 bedroom apartment, to a single room and now NO income, and soon without that room. Trust me I wish I could go back to doing what I was doing. Anyway…anyone have any suggestions?

Jeff, I was also subbing and it messed up my benefits. It is a crock. I was let go from a public school due to budget cuts. I was a special ed teacher which got cut so much out of their budget they let 16 of us go at the school I worked at. No telling how many got let go at the other schools of the district. I live in Texas and for every job I put in for there are at least 200 or more putting in for the same job. I have had some interviews but no luck. I have no insurance and it is killing me financially paying for medication that me and my son take. It breaks my heart that I went to college, got a degree and am so broke I can barely afford to put gas in my car. Now, my unemployment benefits have run out. What the hell am I going to do now? Hopefully I will be able to get extended benefits but it will be lower than the regular benefits. When is this economy going to get better? As for people thinking there are jobs in Texas, think again….sorry if I sound bitter. It’s just hard to keep your chin up in this recession.

My heart goes out to all who are suffering in this economy.

Unemployed since the end of January 2012 due to a new veep initiated layoff of me and one other person (“company restructuring”). I found out not long ago they had hired a new admin to do some of the stuff I did, plus other stuff. I’m sure she’s not getting paid what I was.

I run out of unemployment in about five weeks. I’ve been trying to find a comparable job, but am not getting anywhere. Moving is out of the question–I don’t have the money. As far as I know, my state has suspended the unemployment extension, but the automated line says it still may be available. I can’t get a human on the phone to ask. I’d take a job as a dishwasher, but physically I’m not sure I can handle it anymore, due to recurring issues that began at my last job. If I had a kid or two, I might could get help, but noooo, I’m not even allowed to do that. My long-distance boyfriend is in no position to help me, and I don’t want to take money from him anyway. He apparently doesn’t love me enough to marry me.

I’m really contemplating driving my car to the coast and just continuing off into the ocean. There doesn’t seem to be any other way out.

I have been unemployed/underemployed now for three years. My unemployment benefits under the Emergency Plans ends Saturday June 9. I have now two children in college, a mortage, a car note and insurances to pay.
I had to get my low life tail back on food stamps and medicaid and i forced my lazy tail to go get a trade. I am so trifling i need be shot by a firing squad and my body should be left outside for the buzzards and worms to feast over.

I prefer to not leave my name, but I can sympathize with those who are struggling. I sometimes feel like I’m the only one. Family members criticize me for not working sometimes. I was injured in a car accident a little over two years ago and I have been unable to find work. My right foot has a permanent disability. I can walk but I have some pretty nasty arthritis and limited movement in the joint. I can stand and walk around for only limited time periods, so you can probably see how this affects my job prospects. I received unemployment for a while and refunds for student loans from the community college I attend, but this money has dried up. My husband received loan money too but it is also gone until the fall when classes start up again. I would apply for loan money, but since only one of the classes I need is being offered in the fall, I can’t apply. Students have to be taking at least six credits to receive it. My husband works at a grocery store but wants to finish college to (hopefully) find a better job. I’m just hoping to find any job at all. I’ve been working in direct sales part-time but it gets me next to nothing. Our bills are barely covered by our income and some people don’t understand when I say I don’t have much money for leisure activities. My husband and I just want to survive at this point but it hasn’t been easy. I’m praying that God meets everyone’s needs.

So for the Republicans to feel the majority of people sit home with their unemployment checks and eat bon bons is truly sad. I live in Florida. Then there are the places that say “you’re overqualified.” I’ve gotten that many times. On top of all this, I am bipolar and have chronic fatigue. I don’t know how much more unemployment I’m going to get and have been researching going on disability. There aren’t many options for people in my situation. But I sure did not see myself ever losing my job, and now I gotta beat the system as well. I am a single parent, unemployed and going to school but I got rejected for all kind of public assitance because they were forcing me to put my daughter’s father on child support and I refused because he has been very responsible and he gives me more than what he would give me thru court. Someone told me I should have lied and say I didn’t know where the father was, and they would have helped. In this country apparently being honest doesn’t help. Extended UI is the best economic stimulus package the gov’t can do. It’s better than bailing out banks or giving corporations tax breaks. Extended UI requires we look for work and we must document it. So, no one is sitting around. All of the money we get immediately goes back out into the economy because people need food, health insurance, and loan servicing. The large corporations are paying politicians to call it “entitlement” because they resent the common people getting all of “their” money.

Huge amounts of money are being funneled into conservative radio shows, TV and politicians so that we’re busily fighting each other for the crumbs that fall off their ample table. This is not the immigrants fault, the fault of single mothers, the fault of Those Other People (Not My Kind of People!). Its the fault of the plutocrats and the idiots who vote for candidates on their payroll.

Right now I found a Company that I can make my own business like a distribution for financial services, the company paid for everything including training, and licenses, I took a little over a month when I started making money, now 6 months after I started my own business I can sincerely tell you I see the light at the end of the tunnel, I know first hand work is very difficult to find, but you got to start somewhere and become auto sufficient, and start producing for you and your family, now this company is all over US ,Canada , and Puerto Rico and one of the biggest, also on NYSE so is legit. I’m not making the same money as before but I’m getting close, and by the end of the year I will! Promise…
This company is design for middle class and lower! Im not qulaified for medicaid, food stamps, WIC, or CHIP. If i apply they will probably approve me but they will sue whoever sign for my affidavid of support. Ive been in US for 4 years and ever since ive always work my butt off. I started as a cashier in Florida and worked my way up. My college degree and work experience in Philippines did not help me from the start but honestly there are jobs everywhere. People who are not supposed to be collecting food stamps or disability should be punished and stop making excuses. There are lots of people who deserves it more than you do. I know this lady from Florida, shes in her early 20s whos already collecting disability because she can “faint” anytime due to a health condition but she managed to give birth of 2 kids in the world (no fathers) without a problem and keeps getting more support from the state. I read comments of people being unemployed for 3 years. Me? Since March 2007. I’m single. I have NO KIDS. I was a student when I lost my on-call job. I got on that special plan for being in school, it was not regular unemployment. I was on that for about 8 months. ALL of my unemployment ran out Feb 2010. I had to live off of $2K every 5 months (student loan money is the only income that I had in 2010 and 2011) and that only came ONCE every 5 months.

I couldn’t get on foodstamps since I knew I’d be denied. According to the feds, if you can afford to be in school, you can afford to feed yourself. Not true. I was on a student loan! My budget for food each week? About $15 each WEEK. My budget for all of my “bills” was only $400 a month. I had to made that $2K last ALL Of the 5 months. If I used it up in 2 months, I’d be left with no money for 3 months. I didn’t want that.

Real good that did.

If you are unemployed when you get your 4 year degree, you can kiss your life goodbye. I looked for work like crazy in 2009 when I was done with my undergrad. No one wanted me and now it is WORSE. I have volunteered so many different places since 2010. Volunteering does NOT get anyone a job. All it does it take YOUR money away from you (you got to drive probably – out of town to get to the volunteer place, that is not free and no one is paying ya for gasoline costs to get there, but everyone want YOU to work for FREE). It is all BS. I volunteered for JTP, for a mental health clinic and I volunteered for over a year at a local non-profit. None of them hired me. I applied to JTP on several occasions too.

I’m not lazy and I don’t have kids, but I AM on $200 a month foodstamps. I had to eat Mac and Cheese everyday (or ever other day) in 2011 for half the year since I only could afford $13 budget for food each week.

Cont 3. . . .I know a lady that was on Medi-cal and getting foodstamps. She had 3 kids. Her MOM used to babysit her own grandkids. The Medi-cal and foodstamp office MADE mother look for work while grandma watched her daughters kids. That is not lazy. To this day, I think she still is working and her mom is still watching her grandkids. Many times the foodstamp place will MAKE YOU look for work if you have kids and also make sure to find you a baby sitter. Often times they will pay them – so you can look for work or so you can GO to work. I know my mom was a welfare when I was a child and my mom didn’t sit and home all day long and eat bon bons all day. No way. She got county benefits, but she was also working AND she also had to continue to look for work. She was a single parent. Now I’m talking about the 80s when life was different (before Bush) and when we had jobs

But I’m not lazy. I’m not a low life either. I have an MBA and I must leave the off of my resume since if I don’t – I never get any phone calls. Most of the time now, I just get stupid sales/business opportunity phone calls to start your own business. But everyone knows you have to have at least $100 or $200 for start up costs. I don’t have that kind of money. I earn $80 a month and that goes for my supplements that I must get each month. RCHC does not cover Fish Oil and EPO or any other supplement.

I still haven’t meet anyone that has been unemployed since March 2007

Well, I didn’t even a full year of benefits. I lost my teaching job in May 2012 and filed for unemployment. Benefits didn’t kick in until August because I was under contract until July 31. Benefits run 26 weeks then you have to file for an extension in Alabama…and maximum is $265 per week which I didn’t even qualify for. I got $171 per week. In June, my “benefit year” was up and all unemployment ceased. I filed for another year, but because I hadn’t worked I didn’t qualify. Yes, I didn’t qualify for unemployment because I hadn’t been able to find a job!!!!! To make matters worse, my husband also lost his job in 2012 and neither one of us can find work. I was told by our county that we don’t qualify for food stamps because we earn too much on unemployment. We can’t modify our mortgage because we have no income. We are out of options and totally without hope at this point. And for those of you who are blaming this recession on Bush, I’d like to point out that Obama was in office 4 years before we lost our jobs, so he had ample time to turn the economy around; instead, he’s just made it so much worse.

Its being taken away by corporate america. There should be programs in place to back those who has fallen. To help them pick up theirselves if they’re able continue to contribute. (Leave no man behind) unfortunately there some exceptions. Those implaced illegally who falsley take advantage of our system. Its broken, it needs to fixed. Look at the 14 Million illegals that are here….hint

I am sorry I found so many walking in my moccaisins. But, thank you for sharing. If I find one more “Unemployment was a blessing, I got to persue what I always wanted to be AN INTERNET BLOGGER” I have every right to crave a cigarette! Florida. Maxed out the 8 months RI (that is Florida speak for UI . As with most, I non-stop shot-gun every job posted. 10 hours a day/7 days a week digging into the end of the Internet. How about those ridiculous on-line applications — if they only sort of work, the effort can take several hours! WHO? claims there are plenty of jobs…. Army National Guard? an RN, SLT, OT, BS accepting $19K for their 8 years experience in banking/finance or social work (MS preferred), a call center collection agent that lives so close they can afford to accept minimum wage, or a CDL driver/owner operator. I appreciate that someone already mentioned that volunteering is costly – you starting putting a price on a drive to the dump. Every interview I have been to, even the lowly ones, at least 3 are waiting their turn waiving their well-earned DD214s — my brains says “may as walk away” . 7 months of being thorough, I finally experimented. I took the first 20 years off my resume and used my initials instead of full name. I GOT THREE CALLS FOR TELEPHONE INTERVIEWS IN ONE WEEK. But, I didn’t disguise my voice…every one of the callers tripped over their dropped jaw. It appears there is some small advantage to being a 40ish year old man over being a 60ish year old woman. Last interview under the UI umbrella, the interviewer said I didn’t “appear” to be able to handle lifting substantial weight… HOW DO WE HOLD OUR TOUNGES????. Ever wonder what becomes of that cute straight A cheerleader — you know, the one you thought had it all working for her?

Ahhh nothing like being laid off for a third time since separating honorably out of the USAF in 2008 an deploying twice in support of OIF. Nothing like having a University degree with honors and still being kicked to the curb because your seniority just isn’t there. First one was due to a company merger and restructuring, second was for lack of work (granted it was only for a week but that doesn’t mean I didn’t stress out that entire time) and third again due to lack of work / seniority as of June this year. What makes this even better is I’m in North Carolina so I get a max of 20 weeks (which I got) unemployment that is it, no extensions. Also going for a take home of $860.00 a week to $350.00 is great with three kids all in sports and a wife who still thinks my income is over 50k a year. Luckily she is still working but her paycheck is a little more then mine after paying for insurance to make sure if one someone gets sick it doesn’t bankrupt us.

Oh I have moved both times for those jobs so I understand this whole relocation but I refuse this time. I have uprooted my children far to many times and they need some stability in their life. I can tell you though at 33 years of age I am really getting tired of starting all over again.

Im sick of the job, –unemployment, underemployment too, you work hard as you can at whatever job you can find, and with the low pay you cant hardly make ends meet. Wish I was young enough to have a baby , then maybe somebocy would want to adopt the blessed child and I could get a little money. Im sorry im just venting, I see people with phones I couldn’t afford and still eat, let alone tv,cable etc. I used to work since I was 17 and made a good living then, but since 2010 things have just gotten beyond baddddd. Im working a “part-time” job , only one I could find at my age, my husband works at a not very high pay rate, and is getting older —– dont have the means to go back to school and get some so called “good” job since college grads cant seem to find the best either……….. I think this country is running out of resources for good jobs and things are just (the best way to put it– screeeeewed) . sorry I dont usually feel this way, I know I have alot to be thankful for, but I feel so beaten down, its hard to put on a happy face and go on some days…… P needs help

The system does not suck. That’s an ignorant and emotional response to a tough situation. States are borrowing billions…thats billions, with a B, of dollars just to fund their UI Compensation Programs.

The majority of the taxes for UI are payed by employers, not the employees. If you would prefer the governments not handle unemployment, enjoy the ridiculous UI premiums that would come with a private offering.

(130) Disheartened says:

Well…thanks to a new Governor in my state, UE benefits were basically cut in half AND given a 6 month maximum. Once you’re done… you’re done.

I don’t WANT to be a stereotypical minority living off the system. I know there are people that use the system, but I believe some people actually NEED that assistance, and I don’t want to take from them. That’s why I busted my arse in college so I could get a good job, etc. My parents never told me you could be let go for no reason for DOING your job….

At this point, I just want a JOB. I’ve played up my resume, watered it down and NOTHING. I’m either over qualified (that’s such BS… who’s overqualified to work) or not qualified enough. My phone isn’t ringing at ALL.

I’m even thinking of taking a “phone actress” job just to make ends meet. SERIOUSLY?!? Had I known this would happen I could have saved my parents a few thousand bucks on the education. It’s depressing…

I have a question. My friend lost her job almost a year ago. Her husband lost his job the same month. They have two children. They have never gotten a dime of help yet always paid for others not to work.. She must have been on over 100 interviews in the last year and sent her resume to much more places then that. I think its disturbing for nj to terminate unemployment after a year for people that actually want to work yet you can live on welfare for your entire life with no proof of looking for a job.

Sorry, but suicide is the only way out of unemployment. Job applications fail and experience does not get you a job. If you’re the wrong age or wrong race, you will not get work. Death is the only solution in an era where America hates the non-affluent. You might get it over quickly.

(135) Elizabeth Chandler says:

If the help is there than anyone is going to take it. Sorry you are saddened that you are refused government assistant but as much as you are complaining would you really want to depend on government assistance lifelong? The government likes keeping these people poor. The fact that Extended Benefits is no longer at the moment is a clear evidence that the Government really doesn’t care about the poor. There is a difference between being poor and being a low life. Think about what minimum wage is. For people with debt over their heads from college and who have Bachelors degrees and cant get work and then you have people who can only settle for McDonalds work. Tell me if you were uneducated and could only work at McDonalds what would you do. Obviously you don’t seem to be settling for McDonalds since you are on here complaining. A normal SSI or disability check is approx. 600 to 700 a month. Would you want that to be the only income you depended on for your life? Its all about what you can settle with in life. Sometimes its easier for people to cop out to having “nothing” in life. People who have food stamps and SSI don’t get the luxury of owning their own homes. Most people who are poor don’t even take advantage of a free college education. Only people who want something out of life do. Does not make anyone a low life or better than anyone else. Someone needs to swallow their ego. I have a misdemeanor charge but I have an Associates Degree and you can say yes that one mistake was my fault of course but I am clearly paying for my mistake every time I try to apply for a job and get turned down. Does that mean I do deserve to have income to provide for my family. Mistakes happen. Its not easy to continually keep government assistant unless that is the way you want to live the rest of your life. Think of it this way, If there was no “low lifes” as you say, you would have an even harder time getting work.

(136) Elizabeth Chandler says:

Do you want to live on Welfare your entire life? If you know you can then why don’t you? If you have an answer to not wanting to live your life on welfare then don’t you think the people on welfare don’t really want to either. Do you think kids in Africa want to eat rice everyday, if they get to eat everyday? Be thankful for what you do have! Do not judge.

I live in Florida, I am almost 50. I had worked at the same job for over 12 years. I could never afford to go to school. My employment benefits started in Oct and only go for 16 weeks… yep, that is right. So I only have about two months left of benefits. I have put out 10 resumes a week since October and I have only gotten two interviews… two. So I took a look at my resume and did some research and found I should never put my year of graduation on the resume. So I took it off. Still nothing. I am guessing that I am asking for too much money.. is 19.60 an hour too much for a paralegal with 12 years experience in Law, Financial and Marketing? I guess I was pretty cocky as I figured it would not take me but a month or so to find a job. I mean I am even applying for retail and not getting any hits. So I decided to go back to school since I am unemployed, might as well. I started the government applications and low and behold, I don’t get any help from the government again. I am living with my brother so I am lucky I am not homeless. But when my benefits end, I will have to take a job for 13 dollars and hour and live with my brother for years until I can make enough to live on my own. Even after I graduate I am worried that my age will hinder me even though I know I am required to work until I am 67 or 70. I mean crap the government wants us to save for our retirement but we are taxed and re-taxed on our funds so that we cant. We need to stop looking at our government as republican or Democrat and start looking at them as potential employees that we hire based on their resume and work and age. Lets see how they feel when we ask for their resume.

I have been un’employed for a couple of years and my unemployment ran out in December. I’m ow having a hard time find employment and going to get food stamps was so demeaning for me but I forced myself to get the help. Also, I needed help with general relief to assist with paying my rent. I’ve ran into problems with questioning of the property I’m residing because it is on church grounds and the owner has not done the proper work far as separating the church from the back house. The owner is a slumlord and because I no longer have an income he has been crooked with me. He lost his other property and asked if he could rent a room from me and since I was having financial problem I accepted his offer. He would make me be responsible for all the utilities and pay him $400 per month. I know this is not fair but I don’t have a choice and since then has moved his girlfriend and her daughter into the home and feel he should not pay any utilities. I have been struggling to pay these bills that have increased because of the extra bodies. I know that he is doing something that is not legal but I don’t know what direction to take at this time. Can someone please lead me into the direction I need to seek because now he is trying to give me a 30 day notice after I have made this house livable.
