
There are lots of excuses for missing work - real ones, when you or a family member are sick, or your car really does break down and not-so-real ones, for when you were out too late last night and can't drag yourself out of bed or you need to take time off for a job interview.
Some excuses work and some don't. About.com's Guide to Management, John Reh, has a list of the many interesting, and sometimes amusing, excuses employees give for being late for work. If you've heard (or given) one, add it to the list of excuses for missing work.
When it comes to missing work for a job interview, I recommend job seekers try to schedule interviews early or late in the day, or at lunch time. Another alternative, if you can schedule a couple of interviews on one day, is taking a vacation day.
Sometimes though, especially if you're actively interviewing, you can run out of excuses. Site visitors have shared lots of more creative ideas for taking time off to interview or to otherwise miss work.
