This could be a generational issue, especially since many younger women don't ever wear pantyhose, regardless of the circumstances or the weather. While many older job seekers grew up during an era when you would never leave the house without pantyhose when you were going to work, let alone on a job interview.

I hate pantyhose with a passion, but if they help to present a more professional image then I’ll wear ‘em. But a pantsuit with trouser socks is always a better option!

If you look like them, that’s fine, but you can’t make other people like something just because you do. And it doesn’t make sense for someone to wear something they don’t find comfortable when they have other options.
I don’t like pantyhose, either, because they are slippery and do not feel comfortable. I prefer pantsuits.
I hate panty hose, but I think it’s important to look professional when interviewing for any office-based job. Women with very tan, smooth and unblemished legs, and shoes that cover much of the foot, can probably get away with not wearing hose, as it can be hard to tell the difference. With a pants suit, a woman can wear trouser socks.
Obviously, if you’re interviewing to be a lifeguard, corporate garb might actually interfere with the appropriate image for the job.

When I lived in CT, I used pantyhose for my interviews. Since I moved to PR, I never use pantyhose. It’s just too hot down here for another piece of clothing attached to my body.
I agree with Jennifer. If you are tanned and your legs are smooth and blemish free I think it is fine but otherwise put them on. More important than hose I think are shoes. Have professional looking shoes and leave the sandals/flip-flops/sneakers (seen all 3 in interviews before) for the beach.
Stay with the pant suits if you do not like pantyhose.
While I hate them, however I would wear pantyhose to an interview. The only other time I wear them is for formal business events.
I think the pantyhose rift is generational. Many professional women over 50 have a hard time understanding why women under 50 detest some of their antiquated mid century ideas about a woman’s “professional dress”.

Ladies, my advice is to just not wear pantyhose but don’t mention a word about it. You’ll still be smug and de-facto exclusionary about “women-only” fabrics and formats, which most men see as the ultimate tease, either prior to the bedroom or prior to the six-figure employment position.
During my chemotherapy I wore pantyhose for my hairless self and (depending on size, brand, etc…) still regard them as possibly the most wonderful garment that we humans have created for ourselves (yes, that includes the, ahem, very male end of things), but I’m stuck on the off-limits side of the Y-chromasone.
Just a heads-up, women.
I don’t see that it’s illegal to require pantyhose when some restaurants do it, even though that’s not just interviews. As much as I love seeing pantyhose on women, they should not be required. Women can pick their own styles of dressing. Many simply have absolutely beautiful legs and don’t need the enhancement anyway.
I would add that if women that hate wearing them don’t wear them, at least don’t knock those that do enjoy wearing them. Yes, many men simply love wearing pantyhose. If it’s sexist to mandate women to wear them, it’s just as sexist to deny men the opportunity to also don them as part of their wardrobes.

It is another time today. People can wear what they want to the right situation. Jeans or pantyhose.
I refer to the adage — When in Rome, do as the Romans. If given only a choice of either a yes or a no — I say YES. Like some of the other comments I’ve read, I agree that it depends on the job. If you are interviewing to be a lifeguard, then perhaps it’s not necessary but if you’re going after an accounting job, then yes.
Believe it or not, there are companies where slacks are not allowed for women and they are required to wear panty hose – year round. On a hot day (it is 105 in OKC today), I have great compassion for them. But, as mentioned in an earlier email, when in Rome – - do as the Romans. I saw 50 a long time ago and I can tell you no woman over 45 should wear a skirt at/above her knees without hose. Longer skirt – - no problem. But gravity wins and it’s first conquest is your knees!!! I know.

Women should always be in pantyhose. Its a part of looking professional. Bare legs looks horrible even on 21 year old women in NYC. Pantyhose looks professional, classy, elegant, and several other things i wont say. “Sexy” there I said it. And in NYC women in the suits and summer skirts with flip flops and sneakers is completely unsuitable and horrible looking.

A (female) boss I had in the mid- to late-90s had a policy that women in the office were supposed to wear pantyhose, and was told by HR that such a mandate is illegal…as it should be…so I can’t imagine that it’s legal to require a woman to wear a skirt or dress to work either.

As a man who works in an office environment I have grown up with strong gender roles. Not to sound like I am 90 years old, I am 31, but I believe in a man who wears a suit and a woman who either wairs a pant suit or a blouse and skirt with hosiery. Many women from a young age detest wearing pantyhose because they feel it is an uncomfortable garment, but as another woman already wrote, stay ups, or thigh highs as they are called in my neck of the woods, are a perfectly suitable alternative. A classic garter belt with stockings may revive imagery of something out of a steamy novelette, but also works around the office. Although some women may feel that only the old women around the office wear nylons, I believe it does look much more professional than bare legged women I see interning during the summer walking around in flip flops. I will admit, that as a man, and even though there shoouldnt be room for this around the office, I feel a women’s legs look much better in hosiery, than not. But thats just a personal opinion.

I’ve been reading up about what to wear to an interview and it seems that skirtsuits are a better option than pantsuits. So, if you don’t have tanned, blemish-free legs you should wear pantyhose. A pantsuit with trouser socks may not work and it would be better to heed on the side of conservatism and just wear the skirted suit with pantyhose.

To the person who says who wears a dress or a skirt to an interview many days, many people for that matter. I have noticed many women want to tell me how to dress and not to wear dresses as much, so I was relieved to finally work in a setting where women still wear skirts and feel feminine. By the way, I have worked in office settings where women wore skirts without pantyhose, so in today’s work environment it is unnecessary unless it is part of the dress code. Pantyhose are bad for the environment as they run easy and often end up in landfills. Using self tanning lotion on your legs covers just as much as good pair of stockings would anyway.
An irrelevant comment, but I couldn’t resist mentioning it:
Four or five years ago, I was excavating an early 1970′s era dumpsite. I noticed that there were several nylons that would dangle from the edge of the excavation. They were all blue and green-tinged. I can only guess that, based on some of the adjacent wastes, these were once nurses’ white uniform nylons that had aged to a unique color.
As you might guess, I’ve not worn a skirt during the workweek in over a decade. I’m guessing in most climates, hose will help to prevent sticking & chafing, but I’d be inclined to say that it depends on the woman. If she’s not comfortable in her work clothes, it’s time to change either the clothes or the work!
No one should be telling you how to dress and I’m glad you found an accepting environment. But remember that femininity is a state of mind, no matter what you’re wearing.
On an interview, dress better than you expect to dress on most work days. I would choose a trouser suit, trouser socks and closed toe pumps, but I am over 50 and concealment helps my image.
Given a hot day, a youthful aspect and a casual job opportunity, I say, go with a long skirt, coulottes or trousers and gartered stockings or trouser socks if you can’t abide pantyhose.
How many of you have found your thigh-hi stockings lose their grip? I ended up with garters on them, just in case.

I’ve worked for state government since the 70s and it has mellowed so much that I was amazed to receive permission to wear clean running shoes to work–any day.
I’m an administrative assistant; most of the time, I do not greet or interact with clients, but it happens.
Given that the days I wear a dress with tights or hosiery are the days the copier or printers break down and I end up crawling around trouble-shooting, I choose the slacks & sneekers 99% of my work life.
It could be the West Coast casual makes my attire acceptible.

I seem to be in a minority here, and, being that this is the case, I feel I must put in my two cents.
I agree that from a comfort standpoint, pantyhose are a curse upon women in the workplace. Having worn mostly skirts in this male-dominated environment, I hold true that, when I have worn nylons, I have garnered a greater degree of respect than when my legs were bare. This observation is given from a paralegal at 43 years of age – you do the math.
As it happens, I love the way my legs look when I am wearing hose – perhaps that is revealing too much personal info, but I always wear stockings when I attend formal functions. Wearing stockings under the dress you just bought for an evening gala where your husband will address his colleagues is always a turn-on.
why do you hate pantyhose? i honestly don’t understand it! they feel so wonderful, and look so classy. and men, LISTEN UP WOMEN, love them, even if they won’t admit it. and the way it contributes to your overall appearance is without debate. so, why? i just don’t get it. if you want a job, why not look your best? not to mention…you never know when the man of your dreams will be out there…and do you really want to look frumpy?

This is a cultural problem that needs to be overcome. Why are you assessing a woman’s legs in the workplace anyways? Personally, I am not opposed to looking nice in the office and wearing the occasional skirt. But as a young professional, the idea of wearing pantyhose to work makes me want to gag, and furthermore, I think in a progressive workplace it makes you appear really out of touch and more importantly – weird as hell.

The issue is that women shouldn’t be required to wear pantyhose. One can look aesthetically-pleasing and professional without wearing pantyhose. Pantsuits, for example, look nice and professional and don’t require pantyhose.

I wear pantyhose based upon my outfit. Pants.. never. long skirts.. prefer thigh level hose. dresses or mid-length skirts..neutral colored pantyhose.
hot days, pantyhose can be very uncomfortable. Cold, rainy days.. they can keep the legs warm.

I think no hose is better then hose with a run. a run can look tacky and draw more (bad) attention to your legs then if you just forwent the hose. If you feel you need hose, have a spare in your car.
Yah, I’m old school and I wear pantyhose to an interview. And guess what, I rarely wear a pants suit to an interview. I know I look good in a skirt, so why not dress in a way that is professional and becoming? After I get the offer, I can dress in slacks or w/o pantyhose as long as I’m not breaking the dress code.

Pantyhose are SO tacky and out-of-fashion that I’d immediately look askance if an applicant did wear them! Tights if the weather is inclement, sure, but nude pantyhose? Awful. Gross. I’d rather wear a paper sack.

In the end I do agree with you, and I live in SOUTH FLORIDA. This is why I am torn after reading all these comments because I feel the majority are pro-hose. But again I live in South Florida and am thin and always feel like even if I wear an ultra sheer color of hose (I have light olive/tannish skin), I still look pencil skinny and look funny. Now what if I wore a pencil skirt that hits just below the knees, fits really well and is professional, and I am short keep in mind. Do I still need hosery? I live in CT and I would look really foolish in the middle of January going to work in bare legs and a temperature of 5 degrees with a strong wind. My company does require we wear hosiery and its in the handbook.
Even in the summer i do the thigh highs with skirts just below the knees.
In this economy if the handbook says hosiery thats what you wear then, and I think anyone who owns a business has a right to say what type of attire you must wear.
And by the way I know everyone is thinking I’m over 50, but I’m actually 24 and don’t have a problem wearing them.
And I’m in very good athletic shape and will also have a nice tan soon, but to the company who pays me very well I will go by the rules of the company. And I really don’t mind.

Many companies remain “conservative” and they are not all in the midwest. It is an absolute that you know about the culture of an organization BEFORE you to in to the interview. And yes, it’s okay to ask the HR/Recruiter if hosiery are required for an interview for their organization than to just assume that the bare-legged look is appropriate. In my opinion, it is a bigger faux pas to under-dress in an interview than to over-dress.
One time pantyhose were originaly mandated by the health department…For women in the food industry who work in short skirts…
Women that complain about pantyhose are not buying the good brands… The supermarket brands and some department store brands are very uncomfortable and can feel like sandpaper and can feel prickly when you sweat.
I turned by friends on to some brands from Germany, Spain and Italy…these pantyhose can last for a few months without a run and are a pleasure to wear. Some can be so comfortable and invigorating you will not want to take them off

Bloomingdales’ own brand hose are the best I’ve found and really do last. They are more expensive than Hanes or L’eggs, but much better quality.
Come on, team. First of all, consider the alternative to pantyhose, ie, what came 40 years before…. Second, men DO look at legs, so I say wear hose to be professional, but wear the sheerest ones you can find. That’s far from dorky. Third, let’s focus on the REAL, bottom-line pantyhose-related concern: you’re professionally dressed with nice, not dorky, hose, but your bare-legged female interviewer passes judgement on you based on your legs and not on your brain. Scary.
I guess it depends on how badly you want to work for the company with which you’re interviewing.
In the summer I generally skip wearing pantyhose, regardless of skirt length as long as I don’t look hoochy, since my job’s “gray collar,” and requires sometimes working from my office, sometimes driving to people’s houses or a variety of situations. I try to stay as cool as possible since I can’t afford to get the a/c fixed on my car right now.
Not every company is going to have a culture that expects females to wear pantyhose. Not every company is going to mind tattoos or body piercings either.
But if I wanted a job enough and knew there were certain expectations regarding appearances (regardless of whether they’re “illegal” requirements), I’d make up my mind to comply before ever applying with the company.
After all, I’m going in to try to get a job, not initiate a lawsuit.

I just wanted to add one more comment. I used to work in a hospital and many of the female technologists wore pantyhose under their scrubs to prevent fluid accumulation in blood vessels from being on their feet all day. Eventually that accumulation can lead to varicose veins.
So, even though I’m not crazy about wearing pantyhose, women may want to consider that there are other personal benefits to wearing them, aside from aesthetics.
I just make is a general rule. I will always wear pantyhose when I leave the house, and most of the time when I am home I will wear pantyhose too.
The cheap grocery store brand pantyhose in the wrong color can look tacky – but a pair of quality stockings (real hosiery, not junk) can look sensational. If you’re wearing a skirt to a job interview, I say don’t leave your legs bare – tights or hosiery, please! If that thought’s unbearable, opt for a professional looking outfit with pants. Once you land the job, you can look around and get a feel for what’s appropriate at your new workplace – but it’s always best to look like a success story instead of someone whose biggest ambition is to be “comfy.”
I went to a business school that had a dress code of dresses/skirts and no slacks unless 32 degrees or colder so I have dressed professional regardless of the dress code ever since. Fast forward 25 years, I interviewed on a Friday and noticed office employees wearing jeans. I asked, “is Friday casual day?” The response I rec’d from the male Administrator is, “I hadn’t even noticed”. As an employee of 1.5 years who works for the Administrator of a 16-physician office in Dallas with 160 employees, I am now addressing “inappropriate casual attire” so here I sit searching for policy language and stumbled across this survey. I believe you should wear hose, thigh-highs, knee highs if your skirt hem in long enough AND get rid of those flip-flops!
Being from the UK, this is quite an interesting debate to stumble upon. Pantyhose (“tights”) are more than common over here, they’re actually currently on trend, and can be found in many different colours and patterns. Maybe it’s because our weather isn’t quite so friendly, but tights – here and across Europe – are not seen as conservative or frumpy.
While for an interview it’s advisable to stick to plain nude or dark tights, once employed, patterns are more than acceptable; many women wear tights to work, and they can in fact be quite sexy (for those days when you’re not heading straight home after work). And I live in London, and work close to the City, so that’s about as professional as it gets.
As for the comfort factor, I would have to agree that you get what you pay for (I’ve been a victim of cheap tights!) If you buy cheap, you’ll be buying often, as they ladder and ball very easily. Whereas if you spend a little bit more, they can last a whole season.
My current favourite is Tabio, a Japanese brand (Asia has led the way on trendy, fun hosiery and socks for years). Not sure if they’re available in the US, but well worth a look.

I hate, HATE pantyhose. I think that it looks good on *some* people, but the majority of people it looks hideous and frunmpy. Plus, on occasions where I couldn’t get out of wearing it, I was so uncomfortable (my body temp is higher than normal, and wearing any sort of tights makes me sweat no matter the temp).
I say that any item of clothing that serves no real purpose should be discarded. Hose are unnecessary unless it’s winter, and just another reason to subject women to uncomfortable fashion trends.
I also think ties are useless. No point to them and I think guys with tie-less suits look much fresher. Who wants to begin each day with a noose around their neck???
It never ceases to amaze me how much some women hate pantyhose. You ladies go to the extreme of “not-a-fan-of-william” and start tearing people apart if they dare suggest that a woman’s legs look good when she’s wearing nylons. It’s just an article of clothing – it’s not like someone is telling you to renounce your faith.
It seems that the #1 complaint that gets tossed around regarding pantyhose is that they’re too uncomfortable. Sadly, you have no one to blame but yourselves if your hose are that uncomfortable. Do as others suggested and spend more than $5 on a pair of hose and stop buying them at the grocery/drug store. Go to a department store and buy some nice sheer to waist hose in the correct size. You’ll be amazed at how comfortable they are.
In regards to the women that say men should be forced to wear pantyhose so they can feel how uncomfortable they are – I am a man and I do wear pantyhose. When I’m shopping for hose I treat them just like any other article of clothing I buy, I make sure I buy something that’s comfortable and not the cheapest thing on the rack. There are uncomfortable pantyhose out there but if you know how to shop for hose then you won’t have any problem finding a nice pair that flatters your legs and is still comfortable.

My job does not actually require any type of hosiery, however due to my profession in corporate sales, I often wear them. I’ll give you a tip for your next interview.
Wear a garter belt and stockings. The garter belts today are not like our mothers or grand mothers wore.They are actually very comfortable and form fitting. Most stockings also stretch and are as sheer as pantyhose. You won’t feel as compressed and you may even feel a little sexy.
I don’t recommend stay ups especially if you will have stand up several times for introductions; nothing is more embarrassing then you having to pull your stockings up in an interview.
I personally hate the Hillary Clinton look,so I shy away from the pant suit.However if that’s your thing and you can get away with it;go for the knee highs and avoid trouser socks.
I’m 38, so I’m not the younger crowd, but I’m not the older crowd either.

It’s funny to stumble on this thread. Many companies are merging and starting to enforce a more strict dress code.
I have been at my job six years and we’ve been pretty casual; I wear jeans a lot. Last year my company got bought out and a lot of employees were let go. I was fortunate to keep my job. Last week our new CEO advised every employee that October 14 ends our casual/summer dress code and October 15, the new dress code begins and it includes women required to wear pantyhose or stockings.
I have not worn pantyhose or stockings since my brother’s wedding four years ago and that was only because it was five below in Boston. My girlfriend’s company went through a dress code change over a year ago and she also has to now wear hose.
Companies can get away with the new dress codes becuase they know someone would love to wear nylons if it meant getting a job. The only bright side I see to this change is men will have to wear jackets and ties and I love seeing a man in a jacket and tie.
Yep…hose pile up in landfills. Nylon doesn’t really degrade. I get a rash on my upper thighs when I wear nylons. If you think your legs look better with artificial skin or you get kicks from wearing them…than do it! But why should a company be able to dictate that women wear something that even has a fetish section on porn sites??? I know this strictly from researching views. I hate hose. It’s an envrionmental disaster. Tights are not as bad…they last longer…but opaque tights look hilarious w/ a skirt suit.

I would never, ever consider working for a company that makes wearing hosiery a requirement. I think to force that is incredibly sexist and inconsiderate.

I wear sheer pantyhose almost 24/7 and I have never had a yeast infection in my entire life. Girls getting yeast infections need to blame the real culprit (uncleanliness, hereditary, diet, even grooming.) – Don’t use simple pantyhose as your scape goat. If that were true then ever girl would have yeast infections from simply wearing panties.
It is not illegal to require female employees to wear pantyhose or dresses or skirts as it is not illegal to require men to wear shirts and ties, dress slacks with belts. Companies can even require no face piercings or visible tattoos. They can require only one earring in each ear. I even have Clients that require women to wear shoes with no openings (no sandals or sling back shoes or open toes). This is not illegal. It is a company preference and many people who won’t comply don’t get hired. That’s probably best for everyone. It can be required as a company preference or for Branding purposes. Dress to Impress….but check out the company first and use common sense to decide what is best. Check out the other employees that work at the company you want to work at and play it safe by dressing accordingly. Sure they make exceptions, but that is the exception not the rule. Don’t be misinformed.
Hello IM michael a cross dresser from macomb Twp, MI. I think if you wear a skirt you need to wear pantyhose, if you wear pants then Knee HI’s. The only time I wear pantyhose is in the fall to spring with my pants, I wear Knee HI’s with my pants during the summertime. I think you look more dressed in a sheer Knee HI with pants or jeans.
First point for me is: where I live, if you put on a pair of hose during the summer you’re asking for a heat stroke. Second point is I think people shouldn’t be paying THAT much attention to my legs…..I mean seriously. Some hose are so flesh toned these days what are they going to do come up and pinch your leg?

When a company has a dress code, if you do not agree with it, don’t apply. It’s that simple.
Pantyhose, when worn and fit properly, are sexy. Not many people will deny that. A sexy air about yourself exudes strength and confidence. Both are very desirable traits, not only in the workplace, but obviously, otherwise. You ladies have this. It’s built in to you. Why not use it?
Lizette – that guy you were checking out in the jacket and tie, if it were just a navy jacket and brown tie, you’d check him out, but if it were a FANTASTIC jacket and tie, say some BOLD colour that ties it all together with the jacket and shirt, you’d CHECK HIM OUT. We notice it too. If our male co-worker is wearing a particularly nice setup, we as other men, notice it. It demonstrates power, confidence, sexiness, a handful of traits that generally lead to success. Men and women are wired the same. You do it as well, and if an interviewer sees a candidate that pushes these traits, they WILL get the job, unless they are clearly missing that much more upstairs. If you as a woman can pull it off without pantyhose, more power to you, but let me suggest this – probably %75 of women that think they can pull it off, can’t.
The cheap ones run, they don’t fit right, they sag…. buy some good ones. You may spend $15 or $20 on one pair, but will wear them 15-20 times. Do the math. Its cheaper than buying the $5 ones and wearing them once. As mentioned before, look generally for European manufacturers – Cecilia de Raphael, Kunert, Wolford, Aristoc, so on…. The quality ones look better, feel better, fit better, and last longer.
About the yeast infections comment, well lets just say that if I had an open head wound, that I would not wear a hat – BUT, that doesn’t preclude me from wearing said hat when aforementioned head wound is healed. Get where I am going with this?
While I am in no way gay or anything other than hetero, this opinion comes from a guy who wears pantyhose near daily, under pants to work, or at home. I sleep in them sometimes. My wife loves them, both in the sack and out. There are also health benefits from the light compression they provide. Not talking about medical hose as a band-aid, but as regular hose as a preventative measure. I sit for nearly 12 hours a day at work. My legs feel MUCH better at the end of the day when I have been wearing pantyhose.
In the end, pantyhose on a woman, my best analogy is this:
You just ran your car through the car wash and that’s it. Sure, the dirt is gone, but there are still water spots all over it. Pantyhose are the finishing touch.
The simple answer: yes, always. Or just trousers.
I’m 44. I grew up in the pantyhose era, but I will avoid them as much as possible. I’m tremendously relieved to see pantyhose die out. They are ugly, and make you look like you have two prostheses instead of natural flesh legs. I can’t think of a single man I have known who doesn’t agree that a bare female leg is far more attractive than hose-encased gams. As far as what to wear with a skirt during cold weather – how about just below-knee boots, no stockings and a skirt?

I detest pantyhose. They are very hot, itchy and uncomfortable – even thigh-highs. They run, they snag – they are a totally worthless piece of clothing IMO. I can’t honestly say that I even notice whether or not the person I’m talking to has hose on or not. Any extra amount of femininity gained from hose are immediately canceled out by the constant itching and fidgeting. So anytime a job requires hose, I end up never wearing skirts.
I can see why some women like them, however. I just don’t think it should be considered a requirement.
If you are a professional you will dress like one.
RE: Thigh high hose…if you rub lotion on your legs from foot to upper thigh, then put on your thigh high hosiery it will not sag or fall down not matter how many times you sit and rise. And they are much cooler too. You are in a business position and you should dress accordingly.
Should you go on a job interview with out pantyhose? No. Going to an interview with nothing covering your cotton (or fill in the other material) panties is immodest and too casual. Even if your suit skirt or dress is long enough to not flash your innner thighs and panties when your legs are uncrossed (which you should keep uncrossed for an interview) the interviewer is going to take points off for you going so casual to a formal event like a job interview, unless like someone said above you are interviewing to be a life guard. Dressing casual and immodest to an interview is a big mistake. Want a job suck it up for the 15 to 30 minutes. Then do what you want with in company policy after you get the position.
casual and permissive is what is wrong with this country. Your bear legs look like hell most of the time…. of course most of the time you wear jeans, and look worse.
Oh my. I’m 24 and the only time I could imagine wearing hose is if I were specifically going for a retro look—in which case they’d also have back seams and I wouldn’t forget my red lipstick.
Otherwise, I wouldn’t be caught dead in them. If I don’t want to show my legs I’ll wear slacks or opaque tights; in the summer you can bet I’ll be bare-legged.
Obviously there are standards of professional dress, but a company requiring hosiery is getting into a tricky area. I doubt more than a small percentage of women under 30 would wear hose, and as this generation takes over the corporate world hose will become more and more scarce.
People speaking out in support of hosiery believe that it looks better than bare legs. This depends on the legs, of course, but if you don’t want to show your legs, you have other options. Wearing pantyhose looks more tacky than professional.

Here, there’s a HUGE difference between tights and pantyhose. Tights—those are opaque, sometimes colored or patterned hose—are fashionable right now. Pantyhose are sheer and often flesh-toned, and definitely NOT in.
This debate is ultimately about what constitutes professional dress. I think people of all ages would agree that flip-flops, short skirts, and jeans are not considered professional (nothing wrong with a company that allows jeans, in my opinion, but I wouldn’t call that professional). For some, hose are required for professional dress; for others, they aren’t—and there’s definitely a generational gap between opposing sides.
I am sorry but these new age women don’t get it.
Through many years when nylon was unavailable women could hardly wait to the day that they could find hoisery for their legs.
There is nothing so unappealing that a woman all dressed up with a gorgeous dress and nice shoes with bare legs.
Ladies take the time and complete the outfit.
This bare leg thing has only been something over the past 15 years…glad to see the fashion trend turning back.

Tights are the name of pantyhose in the UK…they call all such hosiery by the same name but differentiate based on dernier-that is thread count…the sheerest are as little as 6 dernier (damn near spider web!) and most US style brands are 12 to 20 dernier (those being department store or grocery varieties). Tights as we use the term in the US are minimum 30 dernier to more normal thickness of 50 dernier. That said buy the European made ones if you would like comfort and durability. Ones which are seamless, yes full seamless in in the crotch area are easy to wear and never bind. These made by Worlford such as their “Fatal” line come on either 15 dernier or 50 dernier and last for months to years respectively in a full line of colors and patters including “nude” as the US market would call it…if your hose are uncomfortable then you are buying the wrong product, either in sizing or materials or manufacture “cut to style”. Aristoc, and many other Euro brands will change your minds on the usefulness of this fashion accessory (note accessory not an everyday must but a useful accessory!!)
1) Bare legs are the fashion. Hose will come back into fashion, and bare legs after that. Repeat.
2) Business attire is not about fashion. There can be fashion elements to it, but the goal is to look professional.
3) Professionals pay attention to DETAIL. Sure, you may be dressed well, but if you don’t wear pantyhose, you may be indicating that you do not care about details.
4) Professionals often trying to represent their company people who spend money (customers, investors, etc), and these types usually insist that the image of the person they are dealing with represents the expectations of the company.
5) Even when “this generation takes over” you will find that professional is always professional, and it is always appropriate. I would never accept a sales person that did not dress professionally. I have learned to judge people by following my mentors, and the generation that comes after mine will do the same thing. Just because some businesses have gotten sloppy, don’t expect that those who make decisions are ever going to accept sloppy as professional.
If I was interviewing someone for a position at my company, I take a look at how the person presents themselves. Even though I may not expect the the person to always dress professionally, I will expect that they pay attention to the details. If it was a woman, I would note that her shoes are scuffed. That she has an unsightly bruise on her leg. That she has a tattoo on her neck, or that her eye brow is pierced. If it was a guy, I would note all the same things. Believe it or not, I would give lower makes to a guy that cam in not wearing socks than a woman not wearing pantyhose. That may actually be a double standard right there. It the person is absolutely exceptional, I may weigh the lack of paying attention to the detail of their interview outfit and still hire them. For most people, lack of attention to detail is going to rule them out.
Yes, it does matter whether or not you wear panty hose during a job interview. It is the professioanl way. Why would you go to an interview bare-legged. yuk. I dont even like panty hose but I wear them. And to make it easier on myself with my slacks, I wear knee hi’s.
I’m working at an office that is changing from a business casual environment to professional business, and stumbled across this.
If you are going to wear a shorter skirt, then it may look more professional (or fashionable as opposed to trendy) to cover your legs.
That said, it is beyond time to challenge antiquated dress codes. If nude colored tights are acceptable, then seeing that skin should be too, if the individual is comfortable exposing it. Age and gender biases be done.
I am based in the UK and I have a tights fetish (aka pantyhose in the U.S.) however most female office workers do wear pantyhose with either a skirt or trouser in this country, London especially. I love pantyhose.
Im also living in the UK and work for a company with a strict tigths/pantyhose rule as part of the dres code.I agree with it.Women especially young feamles do not seem to appreciate that bare legs and feet can be off putting and can look unpleasant.Pantyhose and tights were liberating for our mothers to wear in the 1960′s and should not be discarded.Now its the men who seem to want to wear pantyhose!
If I’m wearing a skirt to an interview (or any other “dress up” type situation for that matter), you can bet that I will have on pantyhose or at least black opaque tights (with the latter being most likely in the colder part of the year). I’ve gone bare-legged in a skirt dress before, mostly when I was a kid (I’m 24 now), and I’ve found that if I don’t wear pantyhose, tights, leggings (for more casual situations), or something along those lines with a skirt/dress, I end up feeling like I’m walking around in my underwear. (Granted, when I wear pantyhose in the summer, it sticks to my legs, but I’d rather put up with that than with feeling underdressed.)
I’m currently in the process of seeking employment myself. No interviews as of yet, but if I do get any, if I wear a skirt, I will have on pantyhose or at least tights. If I go with slacks, then I might opt for knee highs or trouser socks.
P.S. What I don’t get about the “hoisery” issue is why traditionally, the “only” acceptable color is that which (theoretically) is supposed to make you look like you’re not wearing any?

It would be amazing for the world to burn every single pair of pants and make everyone wear sweaters and skirts or dresses, but THAT will never happen! In all seriousness, however, nylons feel amazing and I love wearing them; I enjoy being female, and revel in it! I think some men get jealous that they cannot wear skirts without rocks being thrown at them; so for the time being, I am going to enjoy the hell out of being female!

I must say that I am disheartened to see so many comments agree that tan skin may be an exclusion to an otherwise constricting (for some) article of “clothing.”
It may not look ‘professional’ to have white skin, but that’s only because of fashion conventions and beauty standards. I find that there is enormous pressure for many women to procure a tan to look ‘sexy,’ ‘healthy,’ and yes, even ‘professional.’ The implication is that fair and pale skin, or perhaps afflicted skin, is not only unsightly (you can’t get upset if something is just found unattractive) but offensive.
I am proud of my heritage, and proud to be white, despite this.
I cannot understand why I company would prefer “conversative” pantyhose and skirt to pants. Pants are certainly more modest. The only thing more conservative about hose and skirts is that they perpetuate gender divisions. They simultaneously draw attention to feminitity and aim to mute it.
I’ve worn hose on occassion. I prefer thigh highs. I once wore hose under my pants in the winter. No heat issue. The sensation of it hugging my body was so unbearable, I ended up having a panic attack over my blood phobia (i could feel my circulation because of the tights). They also give me allergic reactions. (many suiting options all contain irritating fibers….but the looseness of pants makes it more bearable.
In short, your skin tone should not dictate how acceptable it is for you get away without hose. Also, they are impractical for many women.
Of course, health and positive image come second to aesthetics and tradition

I agree with Mike. I am sick of this bare leg look on women. I grew up in the ’70′s and almost all women including my mother wore pantyhose.
I wear them in privacy all the time. If I was comfortable with the boss and coharts in an office environment I would wear them too!
Maybe women aren’t wearing the right brands. I don’t know!
I say girl or woman definitely wear them to the interview. It projects confidence and professionalism.

The women that hate pantyhose. You need to by the right brand and quality. It makes a huge difference. You get what you pay for. Higher quality hose is much more comfortable to wear.
As a straight guy I find tights quite alluring on women. I have spoken to my female friends and previous girlfriends about this – all of which find it’s quite normal o b v i o u s l y. They give off sex appeal and women show class when they wear them. Of course they have practical reasons why they’re worn however fashion is another reason. Tights are fantastic and to all you girls on here who adorn them from time to time I salute you! x
I’m an older female (54) and really don’t like the bare-legged look with shorter skirts. Very few females (with the exception of teenagers) have flawless legs and I’ve seen some ghastly examples here in Cincinnati. I’ll go with longer flowing skirts (minus hose) in the summer, but the rest of the time, it’s pants for me.
Whether you like it or not, first impressions DO make a difference! Also, perception is (usually) reality. When I interview potential employees, my first impression is what I see. If you dress sloppily, your chances of being hired have dropped to less than 1%. This goes for both men and women.
I wear pantyhose/stockings almost 100% of the time, because not only do my legs look better, but they feel good too. I agree with everyone else who has commented on the importance of buying good, quality hose. My favorite brand is Wolford and yes, they are expensive. But a single pair has lasted me for more than a year too. So you do get what you pay for.

My mother has worn pantyhose all her life and as an older woman she has beautiful legs. I believe that panyhose helps to keep your legs in shape and keeps it from being too exposed to the sun. However uncomfortable they are you will not regret it when you are 45+.

i am a man and i´m used to wear pantyhose under my trousers and i love it i couldn´t understand why women don´t like it.

“Antiquated mid century?” My mother had bare legs in the summer during the 60′s and I had bare legs with summer dresses my 20′s through my 40′s. A job interview is a different situation.
When women under 50 become women over 50, they will understand the rift. They will see their age spots, their varicose veins, their scars and crepey skin and either say, “I’m never wearing a dress again or I”m wearing pants forever.”
There are a lot of rifts between women of different generations. My mother wore girdles and high heels and dresses when she went to the grocery store. She would never dream of letting her flab hang out like younger women do today.
I would hardly call pantyhose “antiquated mid-century ideas” but a matter of vanity and hiding flaws. When women are young, they don’t worry about hiding flaws (although many of them should) but when they are older, they will see how unkind society is to older women – after the men have stopped looking at their bare legs forever.

I’m a man and love women in pantyhose. They are sexy especially with open toe shoe’s. I do wear pantyhose all the time I love the way the make my legs feel. Kind of like energizing them when I have them on.

Yes. Wear them if you interview in a skirt otherwise wear a pantsuit. I am a manager and I can tell you it would be a very short interview if you arrived in my office with the bare-legged look. It would be the equivalent of a man coming in without a tie. I immediately tells me you don’t care enough about this job to even dress up fully professional for an interview. The interview would be 10 minutes and a thanks… it was nice talking to you… now go apply at Walmart because you’ll never get hired here.
To the person who said a man should have to wear hose for a day before saying women should, I have, and I think if you find the RIGHT brand, they’re COMFY!! I like them. Occasionally when my restless leg syndrome acts up I put on a pair.
There’s a self-awareness issue here… an amazing number of women think they have much smoother legs than they actually have. Sorry… varicose veins, baggy knees and gnarly ankles and feet are a distraction for both women AND men, so if you are so afflicted, be honest and either wear pant suits, or wear a good quality pair of hose.
If you complain that they don’t fit, you didn’t take the time to find the right fit, or you went cheap. It’s an interview, spend the money, look great, get the job, then dress as you like! But if you go on the cheap, well, you got what you paid for.
This woman I used to work with at least once a month would go to the mall on her lunch hour, crow about “the great shoes she just got for $9″ and then bitch about the same shoes the following Monday!
Bare legs look horrid. Very young girls can pull it off but even then the percentage is small. The bad part is, if they are allowed to do it, then the 95% of women where it is not an attractive look at all have the right to do it. honestly? if a company doesnt hire me because i’m not wearing pantyhose… then i dont want to work for them. we’re talking about wearing them to an INTERVIEW. not everyone feels like this, but i interview a company as much as they’re interviewing me. and the last thing they should worry about is if i’m wearing pantyhose. silly.
I think pantyhose or stockings look very professional. I usally wear them more often in winter and sandal open toes in summer without them.
I think all men that agree on the subject should have to waer them for a week under there tousers with no socks, what do you think girls.

Who are all these women with ugly legs? It’s like saying they look better with a bag over their faces. Stockings are never the right color unless you spend $15 for one pair, in which case they rip so easily that you could end up spending $60 a week on them. The resonable expense for stockings gets you ugly colored legs that don’t look natural at all. PLEASE STOP wearing them. Women, your legs are beautiful the way they are.

Hose are hot, like it or not. Don’t care about interviews or anything else. A women in hose is a knock out. Bare legs look fine in a bikini, not so good in a business world. I have to agree with Derrick. Luxury Hosiery on women in a nice dress, skirt or sweater dress is beyond hot! and very arousing and mentally stimulating when I see a gal who dresses up like that.

Depending on the age or masculinity of the skin stumps you may get the Hen or Rooster label.
It depends on the industry and what you want your interpretation to be. If you are female in a male dominated industry and want to be seen as a female admin, then were a skirt. If you want to be seen as an equal, save your femininity side for after hours, there are more important things to be thinking about during work hours.
Trousers and socks? It’s sad that you speak of a womens rights movement and then suggest that women wear pants and socks. If you ladies want to look like us guys then more power to ya. Don’t hate the players, hate the game.
As an employer myself, I am more concerned about the continuous string of tips and “tricks” to present a different you to the interview. I want to see the real you. I feel like I have been scammed if you come to the interview in a business suit with a skirt and pantyhose and heels and then when employed we cannot get you out of attire that looks like granny’s pajamas. If you feel the job requires the suit and pantyhose and heels for the interview than you should expect the job requires similar attire for a professional image for the company. I do know one of the biggest factors of who will be laid off first in companies is who is not presenting the most positive image to our customers. Don’t try and dup the hiring manager, you don’t want to start work with a manger who feels like they have been the victim of a bait and switch scam.
I wish women would ask men what they think about the bare leg fashion. If most men were able to be honest or asked the question…Do women look better in pantyhose and stockings? I would bet 90% of the response would be hell yeah. They cause a women’s legs to be alluring. Why do you think Hanes coined the slogan in the 90′s “the gentlemen ppefer hanes” (in hosiery ads). The ad specifically showed a man looking down at a woman legs who was wearing pantyhose. But no….today’s women could care less about themselves or how they present themselves to men. (most likely due to men are the same way). Men could care less how they look. (like slobs) and would prefer be that way. In order to stay that we we lowered the standard for how women present themselves to us. (ie at one time women cared about how they look to attract the male partner or husband. Since we lowered our standard we also sent a message to women that they don’t have to care either. i am rambling but this whole decline came from men first and women gladly joined in. I wish it would all change back to a time we cared about how we presented ourselves to the public and opposite sexes.

I’m from Australia, and I hardly ever see pantyhose in my city, apart from on very old ladies. Lots of black stockings, but not those sheer fleshy things. However, if that’s how it’s done where you’re from, I’d stick to it for the interview. I find job interviews are mostly about ticking the right boxes.
Still, it’s sad that people feel they need to be so controlling over clothing. If you reject a good candidate because they don’t wear hose, you’re pretty incompetent.

Wow!!! I never thought this would create such a controversy. And to think I stumbled upon this trying to know what people think about back seam nylons for the office. I personally always use pantyhose for the office or when dressing up. It just looks more polished. And the weather is no excuse for not wearing them as profesional men wear suits and ties in all kinds of weather also. So what do you think people? Would a nice pencil skirt and back seam nylons be too sexy for the office?
Not at all my wife wears seamed stockings to her job at least 3 times a week and her skirts are to the knee or 3 in above the knee and she works for wells fargo and she feels sexy wearing them,they have never told her she could not wear them, I for one really enjoy her love of ntlons
I don’t think backseams are too much compared to what I have seen on the flip side of this conversation… which is women dressed up with hose with zebra or other full patterns or even lace… those can be a bit much and as unprofessional looking as the bare legs are. Both ends of the spectrum belong other places… like the beach or the bedroom.
I’m amused at all the comments that are accusing men of being the enforcers of pantyhose. As a man I will admit that I do pay attention to a woman’s legs (if she’s wearing a skirt), however in my work experience most women pay just as much attention to other womens’ legs. With that being said, I feel it’s really up to the individual to decide what to wear. So unless you’re paid to enforce your company’s dress code, try not to accuse somebody of being a “giant dorky idiot”, if they’re making an honest effort to look professional.

I am a recently relocated (from New England) California resident; it is February here and almost 70 degrees. I have an interview soon for a community college job. All my professional clothes are skirts, and I have good interview clothes and shoes; I was trying to figure out if I should wear hose or not. I am very pale and most nude hose looks orange on me; black/opaque hose seems wrong for the skirts and shoes I have … and my budget is such that I can’t go shopping for more than pantyhose right now. The women I have asked out here seem split down the generation gap: 40 and under, shave, a little lotion, and great shoes – good to go; over 40, pantyhose. (I am 46 and was hoping for a clear NO PANTYHOSE vote, but Argh!) I think I will look for very pale hose and bring an extra pair in case of a run…
I just interviewed a bunch of people for an opening in my firm. During the preliminary rounds of interviews I didn’t pay much attention to the details of the candidates attire. As long as they looked professional I was happy. However, when we narrowed it down to the final two individuals, one came in wearing a nice suit and bare legs, the other came in wearing a nice suit and tan or flesh colored hosiery. The one wearing the hosiery looked more professional. The one with bare legs simply looked like she couldn’t be bothered to finish her appearance. Regardless of whether that was true or not, that was the impression she gave. The one wearing the hose gave us (the interview team) the impression she was there to work and not rush out at 5:00 to go to the beach, etc. She just looked more put together.
One of the women on the interview team also pointed out that hosiery is now coming back in to style and that she has started wearing flesh tone hose regularly. She’s 31 years old.

Oh please! As a man who has interviewed hundreds of women over the last 20 years, some wearing flip flops with tee-shirts and others wearing professional outfits, guess who gets the job? If you want to be really comfortable, stay home eat your Twinkies and get fat. Employers expect men and women to look professional and that is hard to do for men who don’t like ties and for women who don’t like hose. There are very few women who have the leg power to go without hose when wearing a skirt and still look like a pro. So do what you like, but certainly don’t have the illusion that anyone gives a damn about whether your comfortable or not. Employers want you to project a professional image and if you can’t do that on your interview what would make anyone think you will be able to it when you get the job. Do you want to look like a frump or a pro, the choice is yours.
If you’re really looking for a job, stop and THINK about the time you spend creating a resume, finding company contacts, practicting your interview skills, etc. Now, consider whether it makes sense to cut yourself out of the running for looking too casual (for what? 1-3 hours?).
Many other posters have said it best: either wear a skirt suit with hose, or a pantsuit with trouser socks. Then, after you’re hired and have made your impression on those around you, feel free to adhere to your personal style.
As for considering a man’s opinion, there are plenty of men who detest wearing suit jackets and ties (especially when the weather is hot), but they would also have the sense to dress appropriately for an interview and “let their hair down” later, after proving themselves on the job.
To Grace, I’m from Melbourne Australia, where it may be a little cooler in winter compared to where you are from, and as I work in the city I see plenty of workers wearing pantyhose, and plenty without. Opaques, clear, patterned, quite a huge range. Women of all ages, not just the older ones. They don’t appear to be out of fashion considering the number of people wearing them and the variety of styles. In fact, they seem to be going through something of a revival. Speaking to a friend who wears them, she was saying that the European and Japanese brands are superior in fit and ‘look’. Where I work you have to dress professionally, but it is acceptable to not wear pantyhose, or even suits for the men. Just don’t look like you have walked in off the beach. However, as superficial as it sounds, what you wear definitely will have some impact on how your colleagues and clients relate to you. If the expectation is pantyhose, wearing them is a good starting point. Once you establish your presence and performance then you may find greater liberties with how you dress. Personally, I think pantyhose and nude legs can look great.
I agree in general that we should be able to wear or not wear

As a personal preference, I am 55 years old and when I
wear slacks which is often I don’t see the need to cover my legs, but when I wear a skirt to work at my age there is no
way I would go bare-legged, and in the cooler weather tights are a good alternate to pantyhose.
Smooth, tanned legs and sandals are good on the beach, not in the office and never on an interview. Shear pantyhose are appropriate, actually necessary in a corporate office. Wear natural tones rather than black or off-black, and skip open toed shoes and sandals. This will not inhibit your style, just make you look professional.
I have had to wear support pantyhose for medical reasons for a number of years now, (circulatory/diabetes related). I feel that this “hatred” for pantyhose is lacking in substance and overstated. I can see in extreme heat these comments having validity, but in moderate temperatures I think these women are not to be sympathized with.
First of all I want to say that I have worn pantyhose everyday of my life since becoming a young woman. And I am in my forties now. I have never found them uncomfortable, itchy, or binding or any of those other sheep like terms that many use to describe them. I live on the Gulf Coast where temperatures often reach 100 degrees and the humidity is like climbing out of a swimming pool. Now with all that as a quantifying opening, I find it hard to believe that just because someone says that pantyhose are not “in fashion” that strong independent women would fall in line like a bunch of “Stepford Wives” and follow the rest of the sheep. If they’re too tight, buy the size that actually fits you, not the size you wish you were. If they itch, pry a couple of more dollars out of your purse and buy some quality. But for all that is decent quit following the sheep that think they have perfect legs. I don’t, you don’t, and neither do they. Sure if you’re 16 and have never done anything in life but borrow money and the car from mom and dad sure, but if you are a grown woman, get real. (continued)

In the summer they keep my pants or jeans from sticking to my legs, not to mention making my legs look great. And most of all, if you decide on the light support like sheer energy or Hanes alive, they keep your legs invigorated, shapely, and stave off varicose veins. If you don’t believe what I’ve written here, try it, but with an open mind and I’m sure you’ll see what you’ve been missing by not making your own decisions. Oh and one last thing, if you’re worried about attracting the attentions of a potential “friend” then just observe how men or women take notice of women that wear pantyhose. Men are visual creatures as well as women who are interested in women. They want to see smooth lines and will perform all sorts of theatrics just to get a closer look or “gasp” to touch your legs. Not that it really matters , but I’m transgendered , what started out as ajoke led to me to a career in the female persona , any way , yes a agree totally with you I have tried many pairs of Pantyhose and you have to spend the money for the quality pairs such as Legg’s sheer energy or Hanes Alive. I even wear them under my pant suits , sometimes under me jeans girls or boys , in fact they they are quite comfy , warm as well.
Being I wear Heels quite often I usually wear pantyhose with them as the nylon feels better in the shoe ! Also like u said keeps ur legs feeling energized all day ! Hear the same crap all the time to how can you wear those things , well quality , right size and keep ur legs free of stubble !!!i
Should men wear a tie with a long sleave shirt to an interview? Ties are not at all comfortable, especially in the summer when they cut off all airflow to the torso. The bare leg look is tacky and unprofessional.
No one has to wear pantyhose anymore, why would they? even to a job interview, its just not relevant, as long as the applicant is professionally dressed, hose arent a requirement.
I was in U.S. federal district court a few weeks ago, and ALL FOUR women appearing before a federal judge were dressed professionally, and NONE OF THEM were wearing pantyhose. One was a federal prosecutor, two were a corporate defense attorney from one of the the largest firms in our area, and one a staff attorney for the bankruptcy magistrate. These professional women were all in their thirties or forties and three had conservative skirts on but were showing bare legs and high heels without any hose, and one was wearing a pant-suit and heels without hose, and not a one of them would ever dare to appear in public in one of the most formal of settings appering anything less than a consumate professional. The federal prosecutor herself was wearing heels without hose, and even had two bandaids on the backs of her feet clearly visible from where the backs of her shoes had rubbed blisters, yet no one would dare think her unprofessional for not wearing hose.
GROSS – were the male lawyers wearing no tie with their top button undone – maybe some highly professional chest hair hanging out in the courtroom? Look as bad as you want to, the men will keep looking at the hot competition leaving your pores, scars, stubble, and band aids in the dust.
Seeing Robs’ post (Feb 15, 2011), I just want to reiterate something that had been mentioned before he posted: not every culture refers to all manner of tights as pantyhose. For example, where I live, I have rarely ever heard someone refer to tights as pantyhose (or vice versa) unless they were visiting from somewhere. My general understanding has always been that tights are thicker (even the “sheer” ones) and longer-lasting than pantyhose, and that pantyhose are super thin and rip easily. The patterned “pantyhose” you mention are most likely what would be referred to here as tights and, yes, they’ve undergone a revival of sorts (but leggings/footless tights seem to be more popular where I am).
That being said, I’m only 18 and can say for sure that I would NEVER wear what would be considered panythose here, mainly because they wouldn’t last me very long and they are generally at least a little uncomfortable; I WOULD, however, look to find a nice pair of (likely sheer) tights that would last a long time. Would I ever wear neither to an interview? Eh, it’s hard to say…if I were trying to get a job at a highly professional company, hell no, but if it were during mid-summer or a heat wave and I was just applying for part-time job somewhere, then I might go without.

You should always consider a an interview with a recruiter as an interview with a potential employer. If they don’t like what they see, they won’t pass you on to their clients.

Whilst I rebelled when I left school and at first refused to wear any form of hosiery for a while, I was so use to tights and pantyhose that I did not find them as uncomfortable as many posted above.
I am going for an interview next week, (that is how I stumbled on this page), and I would prefer to be over formal than not formal enough when I am dealing with my career. It is the same reason that I take out the extra earings from my ear, and why I wear foundation on my face.
However, I do not think tights wearing should be enforced on people.

I have tried not wearing pantyhose 4 times and I have such delicate skin that in addition to getting several blisters on both feet, my shoes rubbed the skin on my feet raw in several places and I bled. It is excruciatingly painful and unequivocally impossible for me to wear shoes without pantyhose or socks.
Even if this were not the case, I would always want to wear pantyhose in cold weather.
I’m surprised that such a trivial question would even be debated. It’s as silly as a coverliner I once read on Cosmopolitan magazine which asked, “Should You Wear Perfume In The Boardroom?” How ridiculous and immature.
It’s actually not as trivial as you might think. Job seekers care about making a good impression when they interviewing, and what they wear can make all the difference in the world.

As far as perfume goes, I once worked for someone who wouldn’t hire candidates who wore too much perfume. He said if he could smell it before they walked into his office, it was too much and he didn’t want to spend all day surrounded by perfume, regardless of the scent.

Okay, I’m a guy and would never consider wearing panty hose to a job interview, but I have been the guy doing the hiring and have hired many female applicants over the years for a variety of professional positions both in broadcasting and communications (PR). I can honestly say that I never had pantyhose on my check-off list but I have had dresses appropriately for the position on the list. I was always told by my HR friends that an applicant should dress, at minimum, for the position they are applying for and preferably for the position they aspire to… Thus, YES wear the pantyhose. If you get the job and you are not required to wear pantyhose or stockings, then fine, but will you get the job by not wearing them? Besides, the pantyhose can help mute the tattoos which adorn your legs, ankles and feet, all of which will never assist you in getting hired at most companies. The dress codes for job interviews haven’t changed very much over the years regardless what some folks might think. For example, I have pierced ears and have worn studs nearly every day for almost 40 years, but I would never consider wearing earrings to a job interview, especially if I really want to be hired.
I work in Career Services at a top ten Business School, and am astonished that there is even a conversation about hosiery and professionals. If you want to be on one of the Housewives shows or a Kardashian, then oil up your legs and go bare, otherwise as a professional, hosiery is essential. I am so tired of plunging necklines, bare legs, miniskirts, and stripper heels showing up in our interview rooms, and then I have to listen to whining from women wondering why they are not taken seriously, and cannot get second interviews. You are trying to get a job, not a man.
I personally think that women should wear whatever they want to to the office, be it jeans and shorts and flip flops, and that men should only wear suits and particularly collars a half inch too tight and ties that are too tight, just so they know how it feels to wear control tops. Even though I should drop about 100 lbs so I won’t have to wear control tops, and I could afford to buy nicer pantyhose, and I could stop wearing clothes based upon what other women say, like so many other women do, I’ll insist upon falling right in line with all other women, since I don’t want to be out of fashion for any reason. Absolutely pantyhose and a skirt suit. I’ve had jobs where I have worn cropped pants and sandals to work (I live in Florida) and jobs where I’ve worn pant suits and skirt suits. (And by the way, those guys might not be wearing pantyhose, but they are wearing suits too and have a tie around their neck – not so comfy either.) Although I might not wear hose on the job every day, I’d never go to a job interview without hose – and a pair of conservative closed-toe pumps. You want to give the most professional impression you can, regardless of how you might dress once on the job. I actually went on an interview this morning in a skirt suit, hose, pumps, and carried my briefcase. I felt and looked professional for the interview and most important, I felt comfortable. Whether I get the job is another story! LOL
For me it strictly depends on the company. Most, if not all of the places I interview are offices in less formal environments. There I wear nice pants, or a suit (with pants.) I would never (and I have seen this) wear shorts of any type, even if it was a job at the beach and it was 90 degrees outside. However, if I know that the firm is old-school, I might well wear a dress and pantyhose (which I hate as much as anyone).

Job interviews should never include items, like socks, that may disqualify a prime candidate from getting the job. I don’t hire on socks, I hire on what is brought to the company that I need.

I think generally it is just good to err on the side of caution. If you are not sure, wear the hose. It won’t hurt just for one day, and will definitely look more professional. As a 40 year-old who is self-conscious about my legs, I am warily going hose-free at work today (as is the norm in this small office), but will definitely wear (sheer due to the weather) hose to interviews. I might actually look for the all-in-one stockings one can find these days. Perhaps they are cooler.
Boy, things sure have changed! I remember when I was 22 and working at an insurance company. This woman in another department wore a skirt without pantyhose, and we were all shocked! Everybody was walking by that woman’s desk to get a peek at “Miss No-Pantyhose!”
It definitely caused quite a stir! Yeah, things have changed — for the better. I’m glad that we’re all free to dress like slobs pretty much everywhere you go (at least in the USA. I don’t know what it’s like in other countries). But I do have to say I’m a bit nostalgic for the days when people dressed up for at least special occasions, such as weddings or fancy restaurants. Apparently those days are gone for good!

If you must go bare, please use tanning lotion or leg makeup (yes if the humidity is low nothing is sexier on great gams). If you have ugly feet and many women do, please cover your toes in public; if you have wrinkled knees I don’t want to see them; same for popping blue veins; bruises; insipid tattoos; uneven skin tone. Visit Europe — American women and men need to step it up several notches and yes that goes for the British, too. Enhance and show off your best features, cover the rest. that ties have spread infections so I think they should be banned from patient care areas.

Personally I think guys have it worse. I literally could not stand to wear something encircled around my neck all day. I can barely wear some necklaces because I feel like they’re choking me. Also, I don’t understand how some people say it’s sexist to have hose as part of a dress code when men have a dress code also. It would only be sexist if men could wear whatever they wanted while women were made to follow a dress code. Also, several people have mentioned that wearing hose is an ancient fashion trend and should not still be used today, but all fashion trends are cyclical. Even now, the wide-leg/flared pants from the 70s are back in style, so why should wearing hose be designated as a bad thing just because they originated a while ago.
I’m 25 and have been worried about this issue. I have an interview tomorrow and it’s summer and I’m already wearing a full skirt suite which is kinda hot, so wearing pantyhose sounds like a horrible idea. I have had confusing input form peers and mentors so it’s been hard to pinpoint what would be best. I don’t want to look frumpy, but I don’t want to come off as flighty either.
After reading everyone’s input, though, it’s clear it’s what employers would prefer.
Also, I’m continually told I look younger than I am (usually 17 or 18) so to overcome my “age” disadvantage it’d be best to dress older than I normally would, especially for an interview.
Like it was mentioned before, men are men and to put myself in a position to be taken seriously upfront doesn’t sound like a bad idea. Men are required to cover up everything (mostly to protect them against me…RAWR!) and women should be expected to as well.
Plus, my legs are so freaking white I get bombarded by moths when I stand outside at night. For everyone’s benefit hose it is!

Dunno, I buy my lady all kinds of fancy hose. You just have to pay for the good stuff. All I can say is hose are hot, and bare skin is not. Skin is just skin… it is so just skin.
I think it all depends what you’re comfortable with. If you never wear pantyhose and your all hot, itchy and fidgety during the interview, then I would say go without or wear pants.

It’s very frustrating to me that a lot of the discussion has centered around “problems” that are simply part of what a human being naturally is– flawed. I find it offensive that some have suggested that bruises should be covered at all times, never mind veins and pores. Maybe I’m the only active woman out there who regularly deals with minor bruising, but boy would that be tiring taking the time to conceal a bruise every morning before work to avoid distracting my coworkers with such a travesty.
I completely understand the argument that someone who tries their best to look perfect and flawless is perceived to be a “detail-oriented” person. And when it comes to job interviews, I strive to be that perfect person, right down to the pantyhose. So yes, I do always wear pantyhose to an interview even though I find all manner of stockings/pantyhose/tights, from low to high end, uncomfortable.
But when it comes to the daily grind at work, a bare calf should not prevent others from being able to perform their duties. All women, and men, have pores, veins, and scars and it’s about time we accept that we have eyes, can see these imperfections, and move on. Some are disadvantaged further by suffering from a range of skin conditions considering unsightly. I suffer from adult acne and most days I do the world a favor and take the time to cover it well. Some days I feel confident enough to go out without concealer, and when you see me out there in the world, know that I am having a fabulous, confident day as you judge me for not “taking the time to get ready” that day.
Go ahead and call me a crazy hippie– but I would rather the world know what I actually look like!

We all need to adapt to our environments. Coming from a significant (stockinged) career in upstate NY, I have adapted to SW Florida’s subtropical climate, where I have *never* seen a woman in stockings at a business function. And I do attend regularly. I felt strange when I wore stockings to my first business event, then stopped wearing them.
To the core question, if interviewing, at least when interviewing in almost any form of a professional environment, you’d seriously want to avoid obstacles that may stop you from getting the job. It doesn’t make sense to “over-skin” yourself on your shoulders or your legs as a woman. Realize, people are making decisions on multiple factors and impressions. Bare legs are not going to be any more of an ultimate focus than a man not wearing a tie. Yet, there is no way to avoid losing out on your overall appearance to the competition that decides to look ultimately more professional. Why add any factors that may impact the impression of decisionmakers you do not have to? Pantsuits are a better alternative if you really cannot handle hosiery with a skirt.

Depends a lot on the company and the location. If I were still on the east coast, pantyhose would almost certainly be a requirement for all but the dog-days of summer — and in some companies, required regardless of the weather.
But now I’m on the west coast where pantyhose are almost never worn and nobody cares, especially in high-tech, where your interviewer is probably in jeans and flip-flops.
One of the primary rules of interviewing, or so I’ve been told, is to look like you’re ready for work. To me, that says dress appropriately for the company and the situation. No, not jeans and flip-flops, but not your best suit either, unless that’s what everyone there will be wearing.
Skin is generally riddled with flaws that you cannot iron out and generally looks the equivlent of an un-ironed outfit.
I wish women realized how much of an improvement pantyhose make in the appearance of their legs. Bare legs look hideous and is STRICTLY for women seeking comfort and who do not care about their appearance. Most guys are too kind to express their true opinions to women about how their legs look bare. Women are so self-conscious of their appearance, you would think that women would voluntarily wear pantyhose more often, simply because of the very nice and attractive look.
Im a guy and I wear pantyhose alot, I wear them in public with shorts and I get a bunch of looks but I dont care about what people think of me after all it is my life. It depends on the weather and the job, I like when women wear pantyhose because it shows they care about the way they look and how they present themselves. It makes them look professional and mature, pantyhose are a MUST if you are going to a business interview, wear them and you will get the Job.
I usually wear panty hose to interviews and occasionally at work. I definitely recommend it because overall it gives you a very polish look. Although frankly I’m not the biggest fan of them. Even with the higher end brands I can definitely empathize with the women who think they are a bit uncomfortable because I think so too! What has surprised me are all the comments about how much men love women in panty hose, like that alone is enough to bring back the trend. Of course we all want to look our best and want the opposite sex to be attracted to us but for the most part I dress for myself and only occasionally for my boyfriend. If I really detested panty hose and the main argument of persuasion was that it would attract more men to me, it wouldn’t be enough. There are other men out there.

I am a man and have been wearing pantyhose just about every day 24/7 for the past ten years or so. When you have the correct size from a reputabl brand they are not uncomfortable in the least bit. Personally I like silkies brand pantyhose. I do live in a region where temps can get up in the tripple digits. But yet I manage with no issue under my slacks. And ladies. More men do wear them than you think. You should be glad that you are able to wear them openly and enjoy the pleasing look of pantyhose.

Please think about whether you are talking about yourself and ‘today’ or tomorrow, which is where we should be focused. How embarassing that so many comments are out of touch with today. Who requires hose? No one in metro areas.

I think the OP who suggested that the male hose fetishists were somehow rallied to the cause may be on to something (or one guy keeps reposting under different screen names;-). I’m a man who grew up in the sixties, came of age in the seventies & I have no use for hose whatever. Never worn them myself, don’t think women should have to wear them. I don’t think they really add anything to the natural beauty of women’s legs.
I don’t get the resentment, either. In the mid-80s I worked in an office that required jacket & tie for men, while women–at the same level–could wear skirts of any length with hose or bare legs. This is in Southern California where the weather seldom requires full coverage. I was often uncomfortable, but it wouldn’t have lessened my discomfort one bit to see my female colleagues made similarly miserable. Indeed, I could look at them & hope that one day we men would follow suit.
We did, too. About ten years later I worked in an office in a similar field. A much smaller company, with owner & president on-site. Following the president’s lead we all wore shorts to work pretty much year round. It was really quite wonderful, quite a privilege, & it made coming to work a bit more special. Shorts & bare legs can be perfectly professional if handled with a bit of care. They don’t necessarily lead to string bikinis & cut-offs in the conference room.
It wasn’t that long ago, after all, that the very idea of women wearing trousers to work was unthinkable.

If I were a personnel manager & a woman applied wearing a short skirt with bare legs I would most definitely notice her legs & form an opinion about them. Sorry;-). What I wouldn’t do, however, is form an opinion about her. I would conclude only that she doesn’t wear hose, not that she’s slovenly or careless or a hooker or a tramp. Similarly, if a women applied wearing hose I’d conclude, “she doesn’t mind wearing hose–at least for interviews.” That’s all. One applicant isn’t better or worse for the lack of or presence of panty hose.
That said, I would advise any female job applicant to default to hose because, as we’ve seen in this discussion, lots of folks of both sex feel them to be significant. As a previous poster said, “When in Rome….”

Many of the women here say no to pantyhose and no to an interview because wearing pantyhose or not on an interview should NOT affect the outcome. Well I say that I should not have to wear a tie to an interview either then. Although if I don’t, then I can assure I will not be getting a job because of my attire. They will look at me as not being professional because I am not wearing a tie. What a load of garbage.
Women always say, Ooooo pantyhose are sooooo itchy and uncormfortable, no way I am wearing them. Well, I say ties are uncomfortable, restrictive, and hot. Will that be a good enough reason to tell my employer that I am not going to wear one anymore, NO. Will it be a good enough reason to no longer wear one to any formal occasion? NO. Women expect a man to look good when going out and wear a nice shirt and tie and if we don’t, we sure hear about it and are expected to put one on so we look completly dressed for the occasion.

My opinion is a girl that goes to an interview without pantyhose wearing a skirt or a dress, looks very slutty. If you are going out with your friends to have a good time then it is okay if you choose not to wear pantyhose. But to work in a professional atmosphere or for an interview, pantyhose is a must!!! Lifelong leg-man here, and I certainly appreciate classy hosiery over bare legs. My wife would always wear them for my benefit (and liked they way they improved the look of her legs) if we went out for the evening, but she complained that they were constricting, dug in that waist, etc. Then I started buying them for her. The key is a good fit – I ordered her some that were a size larger than she would get for herself, and got her “regular” rather than “control top”. I also found some with a wider, softer waistband that doesn’t dig.
The result? Once she tried the new style and fit, she started wearing hose more often – even under her jeans – and she was perfectly comfortable all day long. So yes, cheap, ill-fitting, control-top pantyhose are probably going to be uncomfortable. It’s not that pantyhose are uncomfortable, uncomfortable pantyhose are uncomfortable.
I also don’t get the “too hot” thing. Here in TX it gets pretty hot, and the office ladies leave their air-conditioned houses for their air-conditioned cars/trucks to go to their air-conditioned offices where they have to drape a cardigan over their shoulders for warmth.

Where job interviews are concerned, I’d rather appear more conservative than risk turning off a potential employer by showing up bare-legged. Even in seemingly “artsy” industries such as advertising or marketing, these people are still running a business. So, even though I usually don’t wear pantyhose in warm weather, I would do so for an interview. It never hurts to err on the side of caution, and appearing too casual could give the impression that you’re not a serious contender, even if that’s not the case. There are a lot of qualified people out there, especially in this economy, so why hurt your chances with something so trivial? Once you get the job, you’ll probably be able to express your individuality to a greater degree – a job interview is the place to show how you’ll fit in, not stand out!
I’d say yes if you are wearing something that shows leg. I personally like tights and nylons and all that, though my thigh-highs do make bathroom breaks easier.
As for people saying that requiring them in the work-place is illegal, requiring uniforms is not illegal and that’s all that it would be. Besides, Hooters girls have to wear them. Why should an office job be any different?

Women have it easy! I wear a suit and tie with dress shoes where I work. Wearing a tie, dress shirt and jacket in the summer months is so uncomfortable. I wore a suit when applied for my job and was probably the reason I got the position. It goes without saying how someone should dress when applying for a job. I don’t see why so many women make a big deal about having to wear pantyhose. Try wearing a suit and tie for a day and you will surely change your mind about pantyhose being uncomfortable.
I know it’s become the young, hip thing to not wear pantyhose but even if your legs are perfect they’re naked and there’s something unprofessional about that. Just as you are required to wear sleeves and not brandish your cleavage, if you wear a dress or skirt you should also wear pantyhose. Going without is far too casual for the workplace. To me, it’s not much different than wearing shorts.
Women are allowed way to much leeway with their clothes in a professional setting. We send mixed messages in the workplace and wonder why we’re being harassed sexually. Not that clothes alone are to blame by any means, but they don’t help us send an image that we’re at work to work.
Not sure “Skin to Win” works in most professional interviews, but suppose it depends on the job you are going for.
Over here in Australia it’s all super casual bordering on slovenly sometimes. Women have embraced the bare legged look with enthusiasm. I don’t think it looks nice on anyone even an 18 year old girl. People get all ideological about it here too. But the reality is that it looks ugly. No bare legs look as nice and smooth and finished as pantihose. We see some terrible sights here with bare legs – blotchy ultra-white legs and even worse fake tan so the women looks like an oompa loompa – hideous.
My opinion is that this look tends to come off as cheap or tacky or unfinished but rarely if even attractive.
The worst of all are the women who wear bare legs in winter. The legs are purple and red with spots due to them being freezing – crazy

As a woman over 50, I’ve always thought flesh-colored pantyhose were kind of icky, but I don’t have a problem with opaque or patterned tights. On the other hand, a young woman wearing a nice dress or skirt with her sweaty bare feet stuck into leather pumps just doesn’t look right, so I’m torn.
The main reason I wear tights with skirts or dresses in the office is because most offices are kept so damn cold! And I can’t imagine wearing a dress or skirt with no tights in the winter if you live in northern climes. Brrrr, that sounds VERY uncomfortable.
As far as job interviews though, I’d definitely err on the side of caution and wear some kind of hosiery.

Wow, this is a pretty lengthy discussion! As a young, professional woman, here’s my take:
All of you women saying that pantsuits are a good substitute for a nice skirt and pantyhose are WAY off. You talk about looking “old fashioned” and “mid-century” by wearing pantyhose, but getting all Mary Tylor Moore with a pantsuite is hardly a way to look modern! To me, pantsuits essentially strip women of their femininity by making us look more like men. Is that what you really want? Are we still in the bra burning stages of feminism? No. Nice heels, an appropriate-length skirt, and nice pantyhose are a way to assert a powerful, female presence in the workplace, and that’s something that men AND women will appreciate.
When it comes to a job interview, you’re INSANE if you don’t wear pantyhose (again, assuming it’s a professional-type atmosphere). As this thread has shown us, men go crazy for hose (and I know that it’s true, trust me!), so if your interviewer is male, you already have an advantage going into the interview
. And no matter who your interviewer is, when you wear a nice outfit with pantyhose they will appreciate your respect for them and the position being offered, and, again, respect your powerful female presence.
So, I say, long live pantyhose! I wear ‘em all the time – yes, even in the summer – and I don’t even own a pantsuit.
Ladies, gents, the key word is LEG COVERING, or clothing that covers enough of the body to be semi-formal. The point of business wear is to minimize sexuality, acknowledge and increased level of formality, to (somewhat) decrease signs of individuality and unconventionality.
Business wear always evolves more slowly than other styles AS DOES OTHER FORMAL and specific-occasion-WEAR standards. There are some exceptions in the creative fields, where individuality is a plus and thus tolerated.
You’re getting stuck on the concept of old vs new styles, too, when in fact what was shown in the 60-s even in a nurse’s uniform or school teacher’s outfit showed a heck of a lot more leg than most styles for adults do now!
Furthermore, thigh-highs, with or without something extra to help hold them up is a better and prettier option for anyone with thighs firm enough to keep self-stay elastic bands from rolling down.
There are other considerations, too: For example, stockings and the insides of most dress shoes are very slippery, and so if you wear backless shoes or stumble in heels, your heel will pop right out of most high-heeled shoes and you’re much more likely to break or injure an ankle. Hose are less absorbent, too, so they can trap foot sweat (eww), and they can cause rug burns on the inner thighs of plump people…The panty also trap heat and steam, so they increase the chance of gyno and bladder infections. Not to mention you’re sweating in the same shoe repeatedly without washing the shoe unless you wear cotton shoe liners.
Ralph and others, if you feel these semi-miserable (to us) and semi-fun garments are forbidden but they thrill you, be a pioneer–get some and play in them privately…and join some enlightened social groups who were campaigning for mens’ right to wear pink in public 4 decades ago. I’ll be right there with you…and I’m a girl. I’d also wear them for my sweetie’s enjoyment sometimes, even if not wanting them nor required for my own sake.

If someone is mentally ill, but not harming anyone, they deserve compassion. Unlike those who are technically stable, but have trouble with ordinary empathy or flexibility.
Either way, insulting someone by implying or stating they are disturbed is archaic and ignorant. It weakens your stance in any logical argument.

People should be hired based on experience and competency because those determine how well the job will be done – not looks/dress. The reality is that outward appearances have always been a major factor in decision making, even today.
This reminds me of the bank manager who had 3 top candidates for 1 position, and they all happened to be female. He asked each one final question: If the bank made a mistake and $50k was accidentally transfered to their account with no way to trace it, what would they do? The 1st said she would return it right away, the 2nd said she would wait a few months and collect interest before telling anyone, the 3rd said in all honesty that she would keep it if there was no way to trace the mistake. Who did the manager hire? The one with the nice legs and big tits.

As a man I say holy words!!! I like indipendent women, for chrissake! It must be a choice to wear something a man could like, for a date, for her boyfriend. But god forbid if this has to be applied to an interview where much different capacities must be judged!
I would look silly in pantyhose.
My thoughts on pantyhose:
1) They are an expensive (need constant replacement) piece of attire and there is no equivalent expense for men. You might even need to buy and change into a new pair in the middle of the work day – waste of time and money.
2) They are unbearably hot in the summer and not warm enough in the winter
3) In the summer walking in pantyhose while sweating causes chafing and injury to skin (ever worn a hole in the heel and had a blister form?)
4) They look dated (and I am over 50)
5) With skirts and dresses, tights, textured tights are a much better option in cold weather
6) In hot weather, wear slightly longer skirts and bare your legs.
7) for an interview? Wear whatever pulls the outfit together best.
I love how men are chiming in on the necessity of women wearing pantyhose. Or jealously pining about not being able to. Guys believe it or not legs are for walking and standing up. They weren’t given to women for the specific purpose of being attractive to men. For the men who are jealous that women can wear them and they can’t. What is stopping you? If you want to wear them than wear them.

I see persons with and without stockings improperly dressed for an interview. In some instances hosiery looks tacky depending on how well maintained the shoe is if it is not new, the type of shoe, the colour of the shoe and the colour of the hosiery. Persons attending an interview must be comfortable. If hosiery makes them uncomfortable, and the other criteria are satisfied, ditch them as one would with a tight shoe no matter how appropriate it may look for the interview. Nothing annoys me most than seeing persons walking, sitting and speaking when there is an obvious discomfort such as itching nylons. I use them for medical reasons, and at the end of the day I feel good, less pain in my legs and swelling. But they do look nice on a women with some clothes, they look smoother and give a nice color to the legs. WHY WOULD THEY NOT WANT TO LOOK SEXY FOR ANY OCCASION??? WHY DO THEY PUT MAKEUP ON? SO THEY LOOK PRETTY AND TO ENHANCE THEIR FACE…SO WHY SHOULD THEY DO IT FOR THEIR LEGS???? I DON’T GET IT THEY WANT TO BE LIBERAL BUT ALSO SEXY WHEN THEY ONLY FEEL THE NEED? THEY SHOULD BE SEXY ALL THE TIME…ESPECIALLY WITH PANTYHOSE.. AND NONE OF THE CHEEP STUFF YOU FIND IN DRUG STRORE…THEY SHOULD MAKE THOSE ILLEGAL LIKE CRACK COCAIN.
I came here for advice but got turned off by the creepy hose-wearing men, and the blatantly-sexist non-hose wearing men. You’re both hosers!
I can’t believe what I’m reading here. If I’m interviewing, what counts is knowledge, the ability to speak and write w/o sounding idiotic, experience, an ability to work with others, and good hygiene.
What does not count: men in neckties, and women in pantyhose and feet-destroying shoes.
Women: if you want to wear pants, go for it! Skip the makeup, lose the bra, leave the hair grow on your legs & pitts – I don’t care, as long as I can work with you. I don’t need a fashion model (or a fetish model).
Men: if you want to wear makeup, shapewear and hosiery, go for it! Life is short.

As a male interviewer, the obvious reason I give for not coming to the interview bare-legged and/or open-toed is b/c it can be considered sexually suggestive as well. It’s not the right time and place for it.
Believe me, it’s completely different otherwise-I mean when I am out on a date or with a girlfriend, of course I would prefer no hose and welcome the open-toed footwear gladly–she can kick them off or dangle them if she wants too. B/c it’s personal time.
But that’s exactly the reason it’s inapproopriate in the professional setting.
Ladies, just remember..as uncomfortable as pantyhose is, so are socks/shoes for men. Pretty much any footwear for that matter. But in the professional setting, these are the comprommises we make. In uniformed jobs, you must wear the uniform. In professional jobs, footwear/hosiery is pretty much the professional uniform. You need to work and get paid-the appearance is part of the job.
One reason I really like working at home is that at least I can be barefoot then. But obviously in an office, I have to wear shoes AND dress socks. At work ladies, you should cover your legs and feet as well. You are not there to be my girlfriend, to play footsies or attract my attention. The idea of ettiquette is uniformity and disciplined focus towards the work mission. So eliminate the distraction.
Pantyhose are making a comeback!
They are soft and very attractive.
Employers want women to feel good, happy about themselves and what they wear. Pantyhose helps to achieve this!!!
If she’s wearing a skirt, I think it’s appropriate. I don’t think it matters as much if she’s wearing slacks.
I am a 25 year old young professional working woman and I wear pantyhose five days a week to my office. Yes, I have always interviewed wearing hose, wouldn’t dream of doing otherwise in the three years since I have been out of school. Pantyhose are like make-up for your legs and provide me with a flawless, finished look that I desire. I always go to work wearing either a business suit or a dress and as such always wear pantyhose. I get so sick and tired of hearing from all the ‘poor baby’ ladies out there who have nothing better to do than complain about wearing pantyhose and how terrible it is. Give me a break, ladies. Grow up and get some class.
Yes! Women should wear pantyhose and men should wear ties when going to an interview. And depending on what sort of job it is, the wearing of pantyhose and ties should continue after they get the job in order to present a more professional image.
I have always believed that the bare leg look to be extremely tacky and ghetto looking and am so glad that pantyhose are FINALLY making a comeback here in the U.S.
Women in many other parts of the world such as in Japan, Russia, Ukraine, etc. have been wearing hose regularly for years and have not adopted that dreadful bare look. It is sad that so many women here in the U.S. embraced that horrid look.

I am a Managing Director and I would not offer a position to any women who wore trousers to an interview or wore a skirt without tights. If find it extremely unprofessional.
I work for a philanthropic non-profit that gives away money (yes we do!) every year to other non-profits and to encourage small business startups with innovative ideas. We receive thousands of requests very year that get whittled down to a small number of serious candidates.
I’d like to say that this was an exciting process but I’ve never known anybody get joy from reading IRS schedule O’s, board minutes and financial reports for weeks on end.
Usually, the final selections come down to one-on-board interviews.
Do we wear suits and ties – no.
But we do dress business casual and our ED always wears her signature purple “selection day” outfit at all board activities.
Do we always pick the women with the good legs – no.
But what does impress is the smart suit (male or female) on the other side of the table.
It says “I know YOU are stinking rich (not true but it looks that way), I know YOU has to work hard to get there and I UNDERSTAND the rules for success. I AM GOING TO BE THAT SIDE OF THE TABLE ONE DAY, dishing out my own $1m checks”.
Crabby, spotty white legs; a roll of fat hanging over the belt (male or female); turning up late; loosing your laptop power supply; etc etc
are not going to get you a boost up the list.
So suck it up, wear hose ladies (even it it means dressing in the elevator) and look as if you WANT to be in charge.
That moment when we pass across the non-disclosure agreement, the contract and the first payment details will live with you forever.

No way, you definitely should not wear pantyhose to a job interview.
In the modern workplace, women are just not required to wear pantyhose peroid. Its outdated and is an old and tired look. I haven’t worn pantyhose in literally 16 years, since I was a teenager.
I have worked in a law office and in a courthouse, and almost none of the women under age 50 wore pantyhose. Thats including both women attorneys and paralegals and secretaries and clerks. Ive even seen women prosecutors in federal court wearing high heels without pantyhose on several occasions.
If women don’t have to wear pantyhose in federal court, they don’t have to wear pantyhose anywhere else.
I think a flawless leg complexion looks attractive and very professional. There are so many pairs that now offer a ‘barely there’ look. Plain and elegant is always best. There are not many of us that have all year round attractive legs, especially in winter, so smooth pantyhose is a great way to get a good look, if you choose to wear a skirt.
(if your future boss is a stocking fan, or you are applying to Hooters…..it may get you the job!!)

I am a guy. I believe that wearing a tie (a silk rope) around the neck is terribly uncomfortable, especially in the summer. It cuts off the air to the torso it seems to make it ten degrees warmer. In addition, we are expected to always wear a long sleeve shirt, even in the summer. Adding a suit coat makes it unbearable. Men shouldn’t have to wear suits if they find it uncomfortable.
Of course, I am being facetious. Business dress can be uncomfortable … for men or women. If you are a guy applying for a professional job, go ahead and wear a polo shirt and khakis. Or if you are a woman, go to the interview bare-legged. Either way, if I’m applying for the same job, I will wear a suit and it will give me an edge.
Why is it that business dress has changed over the last 20 years for women but not for men? I can think of two companies where the dress for men is simple: long sleeve shirt, tie, and suit coat. For women, it’s anything goes. One company is one that sells men’s suits (so of course) they expect men to wear a suit. The last time I bought a suit, the woman had on khakis and flip-flops. All the men in the store wore suits. The other business is a car rental company. Even on the hottest days, men wore long sleeve shirts and ties (they got to take their suit coat off once they arrived at work). Women wore short-sleeved blouses, skirts, and no hosiery. Hmm.
Hmm, I’ve worked at non-profits and law offices, and neither bother with pantyhose. Personally, I prefer tights and not one person has ever said a thing about it. I’m far too pale to be wearing pantyhose that do not match my face or arms. Black tights are more comfortable and look much better; and tights are most certainly “in” right now, so I do not feel that an interviewer would be scandalized by them.
Are we talking about bare vs. covered or hose specifically? Seems to me that under a skirt, men can’t tell the difference. Tights are much more comfortable and most men seem to think they are the same as hose – and tights have better colors.
I don’t know why you all care so much about what other people do. It’s not your moral duty to tell them that they’re unprofessional / missing out unless they sat down in your office to be interviewed. Let them live their life – god knows we have much more important issues (nuclear weaponry, environmental pollution, running out of usable drinking water, etc) to address.
I interview dozens of people daily for various positions for our company. Women who wear pantyhose vs. those who don’t are much more likely to get the position. Sorry…just being honest and I’m the one in charge of the hiring.
I too feel pantyhose or stockings complete a look but think it should be up to individual to wear or not wear. Not necessarily an age thing since the 70+ woman in the hell I worked loved not wearing them. Only personal opinion that she could have used them but hey if she didn’t care what she looked like….There were more fashion don’ts there with the office manager’s offspring wearing jeans with lots of rips and holes and flip flops and another wearing pants tighter than most of my tights. And the off mgr wearing some awful schlucky looking pants that I even hate to wear around the house doing dirty stuff. Even when I (and some others) did wear jeans it looked more professional than most of the others most of the time.
