Are you afraid to use your vacation time? You shouldn't be. A new survey from Adecco reports that workplaces are very accepting of using vacation time, with 83% of workers saying that they have never been denied vacation time. Most of those who were denied were turned down because a co-worker already had a vacation scheduled for the same time period.

However, despite the fact that their boss will most likely approve it many employees don't take all the time off they are entitled to. They survey notes that 75% of American workers have not used all their vacation time, so far this year. 39% plan to use it before year end, but 35% will not use it in 2012.

On the flip side, the survey found that almost half of Americans (47%) take sick days as vacation days. More than a quarter also use bereavement days (26%) and jury duty days (27%) for vacation.

How much vacation do employees get? The surveyed employees reported the following amounts of vacation time:

  • More than 3 weeks - 36%
  • 3 weeks - 26%
  • 2 weeks - 22%
  • 1 week or less - 16%

If you do have time off you need to take before the end of the year and you have a bit of it to spare, you can use some of it to work on your career.   Here's how to give your job search a boost during the holidays.
