Walmart Black Friday Strike

By November 20, 2012

Follow me on:

There are news reports that workers at about 1000 Walmart stores nationwide will be striking on Black Friday, the busiest shopping day of the year.   OUR Walmart (Organization United for Respect at Walmart), which describes the organization as an independent, not-for-profit organization for hourly associates, is asking employees to sign an online Black Friday pledge which says:

I will join OUR Walmart members across the country and will refuse to work on Black Friday in protest of Walmart's continuous acts of retaliation against those of us who speak out for better pay, affordable healthcare, improved working conditions, fair schedules, more hours, and most of all, respect.

On a related note, The Huffington Post reports on wages at Walmart which, along with hours and benefits, are the issues Walmart workers are concerned about.

The New York Times reports that Walmart has filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board against  OUR Walmart in an attempt to stop the protests.
