References At some point during your job search, an employer will ask for your references. Typically, it will be when the company is seriously interested in you as a potential hire.   However, it could happen even earlier in the hiring process.

It's important to be prepared to provide a list of references who can attest to the skills and qualifications that you have for the job you are applying for.

The people you use as references should know that you are going to use them and you should know that they are prepared to give you an outstanding recommendation. Here's how to ask for a reference, along with a sample reference request letter you can tailor to fit your personal circumstances.
