One of the questions that is often asked when discussing jobs is "What should you be when you grow up?" It's not just kids asking the question. Even adults who have had a job, or a few, wonder about what they are going to do next in their career - when they consider themselves a bit more of a grown-up.
My take on deciding on what to do when you grow up is that even though it's always good to explore options, you don't need to decide what you want to do at a young age. In fact, you shouldn't make a decision too soon.
What you should do is spend some time checking out options to see what might be a fit. There are a variety of personality tests that you can take online to help determine what career or job is right for you.
There are aptitude tests you can take to see whether you have an aptitude for sales or for firefighting, for example. You can even take a Circus Aptitude Test to find out if you should run away and join the circus!
You can also take career quizzes to see if one of a variety of occupations might be something you'd like to do.
One of the presenters I heard at a college orientation summed it up perfectly - at some point, your dreams will intersect with reality and then it's time for decision making. Keeping in mind though, that most of us change careers more than a few times along the way.
How about you? What do you want to be when you grow up?
