One of the requirements for those collecting unemployment benefits is keeping track of your work search. That's not always easy, because, in many cases, job seekers are applying online and it can be a challenge to manage and track where you have applied.
It is important though. A recent StartWire survey of 25,000 unemployed workers reports that:
- 25% of job seekers had their work search records audited by state unemployment agencies
- Of those that failed to provide documentation, 75% had to re-pay benefits or were denied benefits
- More than 85% believe that staying organized improved the outcome of their job search
All 50 states requiring unemployed benefit claimants to track their work search on a weekly basis. StartWire, the Internet job search organizer website, has provided a free way for unemployed workers to track their job searches so they don't jeopardize their benefits.
With just a click from within StartWire, job seekers can customize their job search records based on a date-range selection option and download the form as an excel spreadsheet to submit to the appropriate state's unemployment agency. The report fields include status of application, potential employer information such as organization name and contact details as well as job type.
It's easy to get started - you can access StarWire with your Facebook or LinkedIn log-in to start tracking your searches.

“I am disappointed at the republicans for not approving more money for the unemployed individuals. As an laid off worker for the second time in a row I will be out of benefits in 3 weeks and I still have not job. I am highly educated with a Psy. D. degree and can’t find work My biggest fear is that I will be homeless like many more to come.”
Mindy, I’m more disappointed that the current administration doesn’t do more to encourage the growth of businesses and entrepreneurship as that is what creates opportunities, jobs and benefits. Instead it and the congress focus more on how to give away money indefinitely, which is instead wreaking havoc on national debt and all our futures. Government is a “black hole” it only sucks in money it is not designed to make money and help encourage less dependency on it by the population. Elected officials that recognize free enterprise is what stimulates jobs and economic growth with leads to prosperity, benefits and ultimately charity to help those get over the hard times we all encounter. Don’t give up, keep your faith and press on, it is discouraging I know, nut your perserverance will pay off.
My unemployment benefits ran out in April. Last check was for a week. I went to my states’s welfare office and got on food stamps. $200 a month for single person. Better than nothing. I have very good family members that help pay for rent, utilities and gas so i can look for a job. Did have a job interview last week and now on to 2nd one this week so hopefully I will get the job!

Besides StartWire, how would you recommend tracking one’s job search? (And are there any good ways to do so that don’t require yet another login to keep track of?)
