I was helping a friend look for a work at home job and it was really hard to find anything that was a real job opportunity with a paycheck.
Not only are real work at home jobs really hard to find, you've got to figure out what's legitimate and what's a scam. The bad economy, I think, has really increased the volume of scams that are online. On top of that, most of the listings you see online are, at best, going to pay a little bit of money or, at worst, will cost you money if you're not careful.
That said, there are good resources for finding legitimate jobs where you can work from home. You can use Simply Hired's telecommute search options for finding work at home job listings from sites all over the Internet. Laureen Miles Brunelli, About.com's Work-at-Home Moms Guide has a useful directory of companies hiring for work at home jobs.
For those looking for writing gigs, Allena Tapia, About.com's Guide to Freelance Writing, has a good list of sites to find telecommuting freelance writing jobs.
I have a directory of sites that list work from home jobs and information on how to go about finding a work at home job. Before you apply for a job, take the time to check out the company to be sure that it isn't a work at home scam.
