Google+ for Job Seekers

Google+ is going to be important for career networking and for job searching.  One reason is that it's so easy to connect and to separate professional and personal.  All you need to do is keep you professional contacts in a different circles (how you organize your contacts)  than your friends and family.

When you post and share information you can choose who gets to see it - public for everyone and the circles you select.

In addition, you can view the streams (the feed from your circles) for each of your circles separately simply by clicking which streams you want to see, so, again, personal and professional are easily and nicely separated.

Take a look at my Google+ profile (and connect with me) to get an idea of what it looks like.  I found a URL shortener so I could get a vanity URL with my name (http://gplus.to/alisondoyle) so I can easily include it on my other networking accounts and in my email signature.

Do be sure to fill out your profile as completely as possible when you're using Google+ for career-related purposes.  Add links to your other profiles (LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, your blog, if you have one) so a recruiter or hiring manager can view the other accounts you're using for professional networking, as well.

Google+ Sparks are topics you might be interested in, and a good way to keep track of what's happening in your industry) and you can search by keyword to find news and information and save your searches, which will then show up under Sparks on your profile page for quick access.

Anything new can be a challenge getting started, but About.com Guide to Web Search, Wendy Boswell, has made it easy to get going with Google+ with a basic tutorial on how to use it titled Google+ 101: A Quick Introduction to Google's Social Network.

Google+ is definitely proving itself as a contender to other social networking sites. It’s interesting how Twitter was essentially the perfect way to network with individuals, but now you have mapped out an excellent way to use Google+ to further penetrate your personal brand. Plus, since employers Google potential employees, job seekers should use this as a way to solidify their online presence and personal brand, particularly by putting together your Google search results. You can do this with help from sites like Vizibility, the first SearchMe Button for Google, which lets users customize their top five search results, transferring them into a free and permanent SearchMe link. This link can then be placed on most online and offline materials.
