StartWire Job Application Updates

By March 24, 2011

One of the worst parts of applying for jobs is when job seekers spend time and effort submitting job applications,  which then seem to get lost and gone forever in the black hole that can part of be online job searching.

StartWire, in addition to providing job listings and networking tools, has a way to help you get updates on your job applications and to keep them out of that black hole.   After you log in to your StartWire account (you can access it with your Facebook or LinkedIn account) you share information about where you've applied and your application.

StartWire then provides daily updates for all the applications you are tracking and notifies you with an email or text message alert if their job status changes.

In addition to tracking your applications (1500 employers are currently supported, with more on the way) StartWire provides job recommendations based on your location and interests and you can search for jobs by keyword and location.   Job seekers can sign up to get new postings by email or login to search for new opportunities.

Even better, you can ask your Facebook friends or LinkedIn connections to help you with the job.  When you search for jobs, you can see the connections you have at companies, and then send them a message to see if they can help.

Networking is still the way most people find jobs and StartWire provides job seekers with tools to help tap those connections when it matters most - while you are applying for jobs.  It's also a quick and easy way to combine job searching with networking - a couple of clicks and you're contacting your connections about jobs of interest.

We’ve tried this application for a number of weeks. While it is getting better, it still isn’t ready for prime-time. Example, just today, we received notification on 4 job confirmations emails we sent to the Track An Application email address 11 days ago. We also experienced a point where the tracking system said we had applied to some 100+ jobs, all listed on our account, when in fact we had not. It still needs work and not something this HR professional would recommend now. You are better off using an Excel spreadsheet and contacting your LinkedIn resources directly. That would be safer and more reliable.
